Was toying with FM2 but I can do a pullout LS2/T56 for less then the cost of just the turbo kit, and sell the factory driveline/engine to pay for most of the v8 components. Was a no brainer for me Good luck!

I have built pretty much the same thing as a fm2 kit for under 2k. Short cuts on inter-coolers, used turbos.... Hope that never bites you in the butt. You know that video I posted of my car starting? At that time, I did nothing to even communicate with the ECU. Not even any O2 sensors hooked up! Even more amazing is the Exocet literally drove like stock for it's first trip up and down the road. For a long time I doubted if the cost was worth it. Then I experienced first hand that it all just works! It's like I paid $1200 for a pro to tune the car for a few weeks. Wait... what's the cost of a MS ECU plus a tune again? I've seen so many people penny pinch over the years only to then witness that they screwed themselves over. Not saying that this is you but just that I've found that a penny saved is not a penny earned if at the end of the day you still owe a quarter. To really knock you for a loop, I've been seriously considering taking the FMII out of the Exocet and putting into the DD Miata as it's already too much for the Exocet.

You do have a point. FM2 is set it and forget it. Megasquirt requires some tuning, but has plenty of base maps to get you started. It all depends on what you want to do. Other than a used turbo that will most likely outlast my car. the unit is just as plug and play. As far as cheaper intercoolers I am just saying that there are alternatives that will get the job done and be completely safe. Miata turbo is a wealth of knowledge if you do your research. Every piece of my diy kit was picked after hours of research.
I will say that Flyin miata is a great company to work with and if I didn't get a good deal on a used turbo/manifold I would have purchased their no electronics kit. At the price I'm into it I could afford to buy a few more brand new turbo's and still be under an fm2.
We are building these cars and to me the more diy and hands on I can be the better. Now get your body on that thing and take some more videos. Your build is the cleanest build by far.

Sorry, I'm going to reformulate In the past I worked for Bosch, where in the end each ECU map was tuned for one engine type (as opposed to being tuned for each single engine). This is pretty obvious to many of course, but bear with me : The miata guys I know which went with the MS3 all told me that the basemaps were okayish (when lucky), but you really have to tune it for each individual engine. So the real question is : can the FM2 Hydra provide OEM-level of adaptability - as in "load a 99NB map (in my case) and go racing" - or does it still require tuning to each individual engine in order to perform reliably ?

The hydra comes with a good enough base map and an excellent PID (O2 sensor feedback) where you can take it out and have some fun with it but obviously for best performance, some tweaking may need to be done. Don't forget you need to do some base calibrating for best results but that's only a few minutes worth of work.
Keep in mind though. I haven't turned the boost up nor gotten into high gears yet so maybe my feedback will change after the car becomes road legal.
I still plan to visit a dyno to get a measurement of my tune and maybe try to sneak out a bit more if it hasn't reached my goal.

Hmm ok. FM2 should output about 250PS, that's more than I need so "best performance" isn't really required. Reliability OTOH definitely is. What kind of base calibrating do you need to do ? I suppose engine type and sensors type, but apart from that ? Anyway I will be very interested to hear more from your experience with this setup !

Nope. None of that. Just calibrated the TPS, set the base knock filtering (you just rev the engine while sitting in the garage) double checked the base timing and I tweaked the base fuel map to compensate the 3% O2 trim. Easy easy easy!

Nothing new to report with the car. In fact, I haven't even seen it in 2 weeks... Still waiting on the body work. Pestering Kevin again to send me the fender mounts so I can do what Rick in Vegas did with custom fenders just to get street legal. I have a lot on my plate coming up. Need to be out of the garage at the end of this month (owner is getting evicted) so I've been house hunting. Also been truck and trailer shopping too but with only so much $$ saved, it's hard to justify getting it even though I need them. Oh, someone randomly found me on Facebook and offered me $30k for the car. Turned it away....

Agreed, I'll gladly sell mine for $29k (for a quick sale)! On a side note I'm glad that these are fetching a higher $ amount than in the UK.
