HI everyone
My mate is about to buy a sonic and wants to use a Focus ST power plant.
We have been offered and engine and gearbox at a good price, with all ancilliaries and engine bay wiring harness and ECU. However, it does nto come with the transponder unit or key,
Is there anyway we can get round this if we were to buy it?
As I see it, the transponder and key are coded to the ECU, so if we were to us an aftermarket ECU then this may not actually be a problem, or am I missing something.

I take it you mean st170 power plant as new st prob too big for bay etc. Your right you need transponder and key to match ecu so buying them together is the only option if keeping standard. An aftermarket ecu gets over problem but i have read many threads on ford web sights about switching on vvt solenoid. As st170 usually puts out about 150-160 bhp probably better going for 2.0 liter 1800 box throttle bodys and aftermarket ecu cost is a little bit more but so is power 170bhp. We went for st170 build with standard ecu dont regret it but probably only worth going the st route if going to boost power more towards 200bhp which will cost a far bit imho.

Just get a PATS antenna (I have an extra one) and a PATS key, Get it connected (4 wires) and take it to a Ford dealer to have it programed. PATS is built into the ECU. There is no module, just the transceiver antenna.

Dont want to confuse you but was mistaken earlier you do need original key to match ecu or do what vmvcars has said. However the transponder is a dum device which the key speaks to the ecu so anyone will do.
