Painting the engine :-) I used acid etch primer and then a couple of coats using Halfords Enamel High temp paint (Aluminium Colour) on the engine. The cambelt cover I just cleaned up the black plastic and I looked pretty clean :-) the rocker cover has had a couple of coats of acid etch primer but no top coat yet, what have people been using to paint the rocker cover? I have some black enamel but it come out really thin and I don't think I will cover very well. Any advice welcome, i will be painting it black not sure if I will go matt or gloss yet as the gloss might look strange against the Matt cambelt covers.

I also changed the O-Ring in the CAS at the back of the engine as this was leaking, the old O-Ring was rock solid so not doing its job very well. now replaced with a Viton ring to withstand the higher temperature.
I was an easy job and only took a few minutes. just be sure to mark the position of the CAS before removing as this will affect he timing.

So last night I painted the rocker cover using Hamerite Smooth (pics to follow) and in between coats I was cleaning the alternator, I then managed to drop the alternator and crack the casing and the shaft will no longer rotate :-( its now broken but looks nice and clean :-) looks like I will need a new one so better start looking on ebay.

Sorry I didn't see your post until today (been away) about painting the rocker so I know I'm too late but just in case you do change I have gone down the route of crinkle/wrinkle finish paint which is available in black or red. Haven't applied the top coat yet as I'm still in engine breakdown cleaning mode.
Like the alli finish on the block mine's encrusted with rust and various other crap so no idea how well it will clean up.

Mine was pretty rusty to but the wire wheel on the drill sorted it out. I used black hamerite smooth and I am pleased with the finish, just hope it lasts :-) not sure if I am brave enough to try and polish the lettering up but might give it a go once the paints gone off.

Polishing the letters is easy. File wrapped with wet and dry. Start dry with a 260 grade, Then 400 and finish with 800 with a bit of soapy water. File keeps everything flat. It's easier on a bench, nice Sunday morning job with a good cup of coffee.

Just noticed power steering pump bracket is still fitted, are you retaining PS?

No not keeping the power steering but can't get the bottom bolt out from the bracket so left it on. Any tips on getting this bolt out from behind the round collar?

Round collar should push back. Then can get to bottom bolt. I needed to use a g clamp to press mine out.

Engine looks good, all the fun bits still to come (don't forget to clean off the exhaust and inlet ports so you get a good seal with the new gaskets). Thinking about the rocker cover lettering if you have got a Dremel type tool I've seen these used with a fine sanding disc to pick out lettering.

Hammer and punch from behind should get it out.. leave other bolts in and tight till you get it out.

Donboy I used gwnwars method, I have a piece of 'soft' metal bar (drift) about an inch diameter and six inches long and simply abut this to the sleeve end covering the bolt and then hammer out. This method avoids spreading the head of the sleeve so its slides out quite easily (if discarding any of the old bolts you can use one of these and abut the bolt head to the sleeve and hammer the thread end ~ hope that makes sense).
Re the lettering; in the past i have simply wiped the paint off (very carefully) whilst still wet but again I'm a bit late (story of my life), I'd use jgilberts method as one slip with the dremel and you'll have some repainting to do (been there got the teeshirt).
Dont know if you are doing same but I have bought taps and dies and am cleaning all threads as I dismantle to ease the rebuild and avoid any problems arising from previous work (found one of the bell housing to block bolts had been installed cross threaded ~ now as good as new).

Well thanks for the tips, power steering bracket is now removed and the letters on the cam cover are nice and shiny, I also managed to get all the buses pressed in to all the control arms and ARB Links. I also set about painting the inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold cover. Used black high temp paint on the exhaust cover and hamerite smooth black on the inlet, needs a few more coats tomorrow but will hopefully look ok.
