The bolts are 7/16" UNF The ID of the banjo is indeed 12mm
However the top of the m/c inlet is bored out to 11.5mm and the outer periphery of the banjo stays within the outer periphery of the crush washer at all times so plenty of cover.
Also, yes we are talking brakes but IMHO there is no pressure on this joint as it is only for maintaining a reserve.
But I do agree it is odd you can get the bolts in 7/16" but not the banjos.

The use of hydraulic "doughty" washers work really well in this situation, to replace the copper washers.

Yes 5/16" is 7.9mm approx,
We use these with the blue fibre brake line hose thats available,,

We retail ours for £36 including VAT for the 3 (£10 + VAT per master cylinder).
They are available from a number of sources including Hi-Spec (same retail as us) and Earls.
They do crop up at a discounted price from time to time on Ebay so keep your eyes peeled.
