No thanks, crash helmet saves your brain from stopping working. Cheap helmets is the most stupid idea I could ever imagine

Riding a motorbike, yes I would agree. In a Rocket or any other open top kitcar I would say no.
I use mine purely for motorway driving to stop any small stones or other things that fly up from the road smacking me in the grid!! Roll bar is there for a reason and is a good bit stronger than a poxy helmet how ever much it costs.

I disagree massively. Its not only impact protection, but your brain bouncing round inside your bounce. Iva had many crashes on bikes while racing, and a cheap lid would be fatal. A roll in the car or a stray wheel or debris. So i personally avoid cheap ones, but also the SHARP tested ones, as that's a pants test system too which is inaccurate and dangerous too.. Obviously that's just my opinion, but a lot of fact too. Buy ACU gold marked helmets...

I second that, never buy cheap helmets, even if for wind noise, cheap is cheap for a reason, you could get a decent AGV for £100. And with a gold racing label too

Hmmm, I so want to say a cheap helmet is OK, and I guess it is. You pay your money and take your choice. If it's just for protection on the motor way, or even for occasional track days then it shouldn't get the ultimate test the a motorbike helmet could get on any ride.
However, I bought a cheap lid when i built my car and I wish I had spent more money on it. Like venom says the comfort and wind noise will be worse with cheap lids and visors etc can be more difficult to find. And there is always the thought of 'will my helmet be good enough' if there is an accident.
So now I have the problem of a helmet that does not get used that often, that is good enough for all I need and I don't want to spend more money on a different one. I wish I had bought a decent one in the beginning.
I guess i'll give Lidl a miss, but thanks for the link
Cheers

Everyone has their own opinion on this.
Considering that the majority of people attending most of the shows last year With there car We're driving without helmets I think a relatively cheap helmet, if You must wear one, is better than no helmet.

id like to take this chance to say sorry to johnp. for totaly hijacking his thread. sorry buddy. not intentional. Paul No problem, Paul - it has turned out to be a very interesting thread. As I drive a race Exocet in the ma5da series, an MSA-standard helmet is obligatory so I didn't do any research, but I wouldn't want to use it on the road - peripheral vision is too restricted to allow for the hazards of the highway. I do know that I wouldn't drive a windscreen-less car on the road without a helmet - at Croft I got a piece of gravel right between the eyes at about 80/90mph off another car that knocked my head back. I don't think I would've been a happy bunny with just a pair of raybans!

AGV make some very nice helmets and not a fortune, I paid £100 for a rossi replica when I passed my Direct Access and I still have it. I also bought a totally mental FM Ming Force 10 helmet that has 3 fins on it, its meant to hold your head inline racing, but it doesn't :-) but I do love how it looks but this cost me £400. The Green AGV I have now cost me £119, that was with a black visor. It has removable lining so you can wash it, because I don't need a helmet for safety and I only ever wear it for cold driving or motorway driving for wind noise and debris from other cars, I drilled the roof of it to mount my secure alloy GoPro bracket. I would never drill a helmet otherwise. Being a biker, my first and only consideration with a helmet is comfort, the price to me is not important. £100 buy's a perfectly good helmet, AGV, Shark, FM, Bell, Shoei all in this price range, the most expensive helmets are going to be Arai and most of the Carbon ones, Simpson etc The other issue with a budget lid is that if you want to use it for motorsport so track days etc, it probably wont have the GOLD approval label, it wont have an option for a different visor either.... Just my thoughts, but all bikers will have the same thoughts.... www.jsaccessories.co.uk/helmets/full-face/shark-s500-samurai-helmet-in-ksw.html?
