Back in the summer of 2011 I did what I had been doing every few months, search Autotrader for potential track day cars. I'd gone from thinking of a relatively cheap Clio 172 or MX5 when I decided that I should go with rear wheel drive, to looking at M3's and everything in between. I went back to MX5s due to their lightweight which I hoped would keep down costs on brakes and tyres. But I was always concerned that I was taking a perfectly good car and ripping it apart.
That must have been when I stumbled upon the Exocet. This really got me thinking and I looked at a few second hand kit cars including bike engined. Going to the MEV site I found the Sonic and fell in love with it. Modern kit using Focus parts with great looks.
So by October I had visited RTR and pretty much decided I was going to go for the Sonic. I looked at all the usual suspects including Caterham and Westfield but decided against them. So the kit was picked up a few days before xmas 2011.
I'd agonised over colour schemes, buying about a dozen different RAL colours to find a combo that I liked. In the end I paid RTR to paint the panels in two Porsche colours, Artic Silver and Slate Grey, both metallic. Having only seen them in the garage under fluorescent light I'm hoping they look good. Next year I should hopefully see.
So kit was in the garage with the following extras either already here or waiting delivery.
Hi-Spec Calipers in Red all round
Rally Design Alloy uprights
Stainless exhaust system including 4-2-1 manifold
CAT and de-CAT pipe
Wiring loom, fuses and relays
wilwood pedal box with MCs
Front Aerofoils
Quick Rack
Omex ECU
Omex Loom
Stainless braided brake and clutch lines
Vibra Technics Engine and Gearbox mounts in Red
Infinitely adjustable camber
So worked proceeded on the car with the fitting of the floor
I added a carbon effect vinyl to the floor but unfortunately this has been damaged already so I'm thinking about some rubber mat of some description which should be harder wearing.
There were a few teething problems with the chassis and it had to go back to RTR to be corrected and unfortunately the powder coating was also not up to scratch. Apparently that firm is no longer used and it was shot blasted and powder coated properly when it was returned on Feb 2nd with all of the extra bits and pieces I had ordered and the painted panels.
First job was to fit the wishbones and the shocks. I must say that the build guide does not give any help on this at all. I found myself trawling through the forum looking for pics that people had posted to try to understand what goes where. After a couple of emails to Paul H it was solved and the suspension was installed.
Further updates to follow. Really wishing I had started this a long time ago
