Yes you read right, towing WITH an Exocet.
Would it be possible, and legal, to some how fit a tow bar to an Exocet? Ive seen a few youtube clips of the guy who fitted a tow bar to his Rocket and got me thinking about one for my Exocet.
All id be looking at towing would be a small boat (14ft approx 350kgs) and then it would only be a few miles to and from the launch location.

Hi Mathew, i'm going down the same route, want to do more shows this year and also camp, i'm drawing plans up at the mo for a skeletal trailer based on an mx5 subframe in matching colours to my exocet. There are a few probs to get over, you can't at the moment get a tow bar for an mx5... please if anyone knows differently let me know... and if you can it will no longer fit due to the body removal. I have however come up with a bar that will fit the exocet, its not to clumbersome and does involve being fixed to the rear chassis/subframe bolts of the kit. It remains hidden at all times as the ball and carrier are slot in and bolt when needed. If you want to make one i'll send the plans over when i,ve finished and tested it. Steve

Hi there,
You can get towbars for the MX5 but from what I've seen on the MX5OC forum onl the MK1 was ever able to tow anything legally. The MK2 and 3 definitely can't. Towbar is for bike rack etc. I have seen a MK1 with a trailer but remember the weight of the Exocet is that much less than an MX5 that the weight you will be able to tow will be almost nothing.

That would be brilliant if you could do that steve!
You are correct, pincherrn, regarding tow bars only for mk1's. After quite a bit of searching it seems that it would have to be a used tow bar as no where seems to still manufacture them.
From what ive seen the mk1 tow bars utilise the subframe fixing points and have a detachable ball.
It seems that on the V5's for mk2 and 3 cars the towing capacity section is '0'. Would this be the case with an Exocet V5? How do they determine and agree to wether a car can tow or not?

Allow me to help. The legalities are that the all up weight of the trailer must not equal more than half of the towing vehicle. Call it 400, being roughly half the weight of an Exocet witha driver on board. Also as the all up weight of the trailer will need to be less than 750kgs then it does not need brakes. That also means a driver that would need a trailer test does not as it is un-braked. A tow ball could be bolted to a 50x50x6mm angle that bolts the the lower bolt holes in the MX5 subframe. Now then, I just happen to have a trailer that frame that I made a few years ago, it is made from the same round tube as the Exocet and may well suit you at £300, needs some clean up and paint and wheels to match your car.
