Has anybody worked out the price of new parts instead of using a donor ? I'm looking at a new engine and second hand / recon gearbox so I'm wondering what the cost of new parts would be. If somebody has already got these costs in a nice spreadsheet would save me re-inventing the wheel

I'm building a rocket at the moment, started with a donor car but have eventually bought all new items including 2.0 zetec engine and gear box, only items from donor I will be using are rear brake calipers and steering mount everything else will be new.
Just started with basic kit from RTR and upgrading as I go. Will have all the bells and whistles, Alloy uprights at front, viper brake line kit etc. Have calculated that it should come in at around £13500 including IVA.
I have a spread sheet if you want a copy, it's up to date as to what I've spent at this moment in time. PM if you want a copy. Only major items I need to buy are Omex ecu and pro wiring loom, RTR lighting and wire loom, alloy wheels and tyres, didi dash and RTR manifold/cat/exhaust.
The good thing about buying a donor car is that it can actually save you money with certain items. Example, the company I got my new gearbox from gave me a trade in discount for my old one, also all the aux brackets for the engine, ie the alternator bracket, don't come with a new engine so that can save you quite a bit. I bought my donor for £480 and made £ 700 in selling parts, I still have a few hundred quid in parts to sell. It doesn't seem like much but that extra cash bought the accelerator and quick shift kits from Joker, all my nuts and bolts and a few other thing, beside that I knew nothing about cars before I stripped it, now I feel confident about building the rocket.
Hope this helps

I'd second Ned's estimate. I've gone down a very similar route and reckon build cost will be between £13k and £14k. More than I originally budgeted for but means that all parts are nice and shiny

Anybody got any experience of Cleckheaton Gearbox Centre ?
Had a quote of £265 + shipping + VAT for a recon IB5 gearbox.

I reckon that comes in at about £350, for that sort of cash ask him to make the reciept out for supplying a new box. Also find out exactly what he is doing to the gearbox, is it just a check, clean and swap some seals or is he replacing all the gears, seals for new. I paid £425 for mine from a similar type of gearbox specialist and they did give me a receipt for a new gearbox.
It's worth having a look round, lets face it the engine and gearbox can wait, I still haven't put mine together never mind in the car, probably wont do until I get the wheels sorted and get my exhaust ordered so hopefully by Xmas, thats 6 months after I got my kit.
Remember it's easier to fit all the brake lines and engine cover prior to putting engine and gearbox in.

This is what Cleckheaton replied with. My gearbox knowledge is miniscule so I don't know what planet gears are "The gearbox gets full bearing kit + syncros+new seals & new planet gears"

Ok after a bit of research on transmission I've found out that planet gears are the cogs inside the differential.
They also come with a 2 year guarantee so I think it's a good deal. Going to order it this week I think.

Hi Jon, I went down the donor route and my costs came in at just shy of 10k. This included RTR doing the iva. My kit was £6500, donor £900, wheels/tyres £800, front brakes £400, iva £1050 plus a few hundred for odds & ends. I found it quite difficult to shift the unwanted donors parts but would still go down this route if I were to do another build simply because their are an awful lot of bits and pieces that you need from the donor and the donors can be picked up very cheaply (in my opinion) and if you dismantle the donor yourself you know that the parts are the correct type... I also found it very therapeutic stripping the donor, whilst waiting for my chassis to be made, plus you get to wind your neighbours up by dismantling a car on the drive :-)

Btw, I built a rocket so costs will vary to yours due to the kit variations....

Hi Fossie, got my Sonic and already going down the new parts route. The wife was very much against having a wreck on the drive so had to bow to the pressure.
Got most of the parts I need second hand: 1.8 flywheel Steering Column Fuel pump & Sender Handbrake Lever
How come your IVA cost £1050 ?
