right, i have spent the weekend working on my exhaust to try and get it finished off, the hard part has been the amount of space left in the engine bay after fitting the standard manifold and cat (to save money). the target was to make the whole system for less than £100 and iv done it ;D Iv used a standard R1 can and chopped 6" off the length so it will fit without hitting anything and i have had to move my flexi section down a bit to make space. the exhaust hangers i have made out of ali strips for now but will get some nice stainless ones which will look better. just need to drill a hole and weld on a nut for the post cat sensor and then wrap it with exhaust wrap. and just for fun... as you can see this is far from the best looking exhaust system man has ever made and it takes up much more room than stiggys system but it has been quite good fun making it and after IVA i will be removing the R1 can and fitting a race can

That looks neat mate. And a lot more than £100's worth!

Hi R16
I have also built a 1.6 rocket and built the exhaust myself (with considerable help from a mate and his welding machine) I am impressed with the use of a fiesta manifold. I managed to use the original manifold and cat, and used a standard silencer from Merlin Motorsports ('cos they are close to me). but yours looks good, and a racing can will help the engine breath.
If you are going to use it on track days be carefull of the noise checks they do. Some of the limits are quite low and normally always lower than the MOT limit.
Will you be at Curborough for the Annual Moggeres Meet - I would love to see some other 1.6 rockets there
Cheers

thanks for the kind comments guys :-)
Im putting in as many hours as i can on the build so i can get it to the mog meets and kit car shows of this year.... fingers crossed.
If i can find a race can that is the same size as the one i have i will keep this standard can so i can swap them about for m.o.t, track days etc.

I have riveted in the bottom of my 'fuel tank box' ali sheet and sealed it with universal blue, just need to run rubber trim around the top edge and put the last few rivits in! the plan is to seal the rear pannel, the center tunnel and a sheet of ali i have to go behind the seat in the same way making a fuel tight ali box for the fuel tank to be mounted in.

Nice progress Just wondering if you'd come up with a plan for the filling cap yet ? (IVA Rule 14) and what are your intentions for meeting Rule 10 - Drainage and Rule 12 - Venting. Looking good Nigel

Nigel,
Filling cap.... errrrr not sure just yet :-( but i have the others covered, i have a vent in the tank made from 3/8 copper brake pipe, fittings and copper washers and i plan to drill a hole or two in the ali floor under the tank to let and spilt fuel out.
has anyone iva'd a rocket yet???

Ref Rule 12 - Venting, I'm a little confused As i have checked my fuel cap which is vented, (can blow through it with cap on and locked) !! As i thought all caps were - So surely this will be a adequate vent for the fuel tank can anyone confirm this will work for IVA,,, Scott

thats a good point scott, i had not thought of that!
I got the car running with my budget exhaust system for the first time today :-) it sounds sweet, not to loude but quite angry when you rev it a bit. It was a bit smokey for the first couple of minutes but seems to have settles down now, the only thing i was a bit worried about was a popping/knocking noise from the engine. it sounded like it was coming from the exhaust but was hard to tell for sure... a bad bottom end did spring to mind... i hope not :-(

thanks Ian,
Its taken over two years to get to this point (many things have got in the way of the build) but every problem, disappointment, scuffed knuckle, evening spent out in the cold with sore fingers sorting out the wires are forgotten as soon as you put it in first and lift the clutch for the first time :-) Its woth every penny and every minute spent building it!
i can't wait to see what its like when i get out of 2nd gear :-) lol

Hey andy, Yep have taken it on a quick test drive just to make sure everything was in order, i left most of the body work off so i could keep an eye on electrics, brake and cooling pipes etc which was a good idea as i spotted a very small coolent leak :-)
the alloys are momo sport and were an ebay bargin £120, one has a very small flat spot which i will get sorted when i put new rubbber on them.
