I have been looking through all the rocket build pictures, and build posts, and the subject of engines is always popping up! What is the better engine and gearbox selection!! I would also like to keep the price down, but also I would like a new unit. I'm also "old school" and I would like to have carbs....
Please with all the knowledge out there, can somebody please settle my mind before I jump the gun and end up making a bad choice.
I'm not getting the kit until next year, but as we say in the Army
"prior planning prevents piss poor performance"
Looking forward to all the replies
Ian
As I haven't purchased my kit yet,I can not access the tech area!!
Any web links to engine suppliers much appreciated ;D ;D

Ian,
I see no reason why that engine wouldn't fit but for that money you could buy a brand new 2.0L Zetec Blacktop which has loads of tuning potential when funds allow. More importantly there is loads of info available on tuning for this engine whatever the budget.
Run it on twin DCOE carbs or even bike carbs then upgrade to throttle bodies at a later date. 165bhp is easily attainable.

Hi
I agree with Joker, Just bought a brand new 2.0 Litre blacktop £790 including vat. I don't have the budget at the moment to go with a full OMEX set up but will be buying an Omex 600 ecu to run with the engine and will definitely be going for a major TWEEK up later in the build when funds allow.

I can't help myself - I need to speak up for the 1.6 engine
Passionford website list the engine weights as Zetec SE (1.6) 80kg and the Zetec E at 120kg. A 40kg weight difference is like having Dinosourjuice as a passenger.
It is less power, I'm not saying it's a powerful engine, you'l only get 100bhp in standard form, but have a test drive in one and see if you think you need the big power from the large engines.
Also in the May edition of CKC magazine they showed a Sylva J15 with a Zetec SE engine (1.6) that had a Chester Sports cars bike carb and ECU modification on it, so 140bhp was produced, still at 80kg (possibly a little less). Thats my Christmas present decided on by the way. They also so the same mod for the 2.0 engines that obviously gives more power.
The 2.0l engines are very common now, so all the problems have been solved. take your time, have a look at some at the shows. Perhaps get up to Curbourugh at the end of July.
Don't dismiss the 1.6, it's an easy install, cheap to get hold of, tunable and very light.
Cheers

In support of Kit parts direct they are part of GBS and have supplied plenty of these units to the robin hood owners

Hi All,
Got a 2l zetec engine from Kitspares.co.uk and paid £740 inc VAT. Delivery was about £50 but can't fault the service so would definitely recommend them. Ended up buying a 1.8 flywheel from Jubilee spares (scrappy) in Birmingham for about £30 but did splash out and buy a ford 3 piece clutch kit from fordonlineparts for about £140 brand new following advice from RTR. Not going to tune it for now due to funds but definitely planning too in the future!
cheers

Kevin I think my mind is made up,I will be buying the 2.0ltr blacktop from kitspartdirect, but I will be using twin 40's DCOE, the question I have now is why do you have to change the flywheel to a 1.8ltr??
Regards

The flywheel and clutch that are supplied with the new 2.0Ltr engine are not the correct size to fit the IB5 gearbox, They are to fit a MTX75 gearbox which is the original 2.0Ltr box. So you will need to source a 1.8/1.6 Flywheel and a 1.8 Clutch kit shouldn't cost more than £150 for the lot. You can pick the flywheels up on ebay for about £15-30 and an original Ford clutch kit for £120-140.

As I have already mentioned in other posts,I intend to get my kit next year, once other commitments are done. As I have now decided on the engine unit I intend to (see earlier posts), will that fit straight in do I need to modify any parts on the engine or chassis, sorry again for all the questions, but being in the Army for 27 years I like to make sure things are all in place before I jump in. Just another question does any one out there have a link to where I can purchase some twin 40 DCOE's..... Regards Ian

Hi, Im currently building a new 2L Rocket with all brand new parts. To be honest its alot harder than you think. On a donor car you get most of the bits, on a new build there is alot to buy. The new engine does not come with dipstick, Alternator or alternator bracket, Starter, belt Idler, coil etc etc so you have to find these. So there are extra costs involved. Swapping the 2L clutch & flywheel is another cost. If I did the build again I would buy a brand new 1.8 engine and also source 1.8 donor car. This would keep things simpler.
