Since Covid started its gone really quiet on here, even for active builds and regular contributors.
I'm wondering where or what everyone is doing?
Are there other forums or groups that have taken over?
Are people busy on builds without time to update build threads?
With all the lockdowns garage time has never been more obtainable so there should be much to shout/share about from the sheds/garages over the world?
I can see I'm not alone in checking for daily activity.
Its a shame as there seemed to be an active community that without physical shows and meets should have thrived.
What am I missing?

Wondered the same mate lol. I spent about 6 months on here before starting my build reading everyone's threads and contributions and was so driven by all the help people were giving each other but now I don't see any new posts or anything ha. My thread is very weak as i am only in the restoration stages, not even yet at the rebuild but it does seem quiet. There is a lot of traffic on the FB group pages though, a lot. I think that's where it's all gone now. It does seem a fun group on there with loads of banter and help etc, definitely recommend you joining the FB groups.

Faecesbook has unfortunately taken over which is a real shame, I detest the platform, I personally don't think it lends itself to this type of forum, people constantly ask the same question as it's impossible to find the answers by searching. But hen again I'm a dinosaur, but much prefer this type of forum for the knowledge leave FB to the children to take pictures of their lunch, oh 7 of course they're cats.

I see what you did there ;-) I'm on the rocket/sonic7 FB groups, but they are more question/problem posts, not updates to peoples builds. I like following peoples builds especially if I can help anywhere, but I guess if they don't post the updates its hard. I try to update ours whenever anything new to add. mycarbuild.co.uk is more active, but thats now exo-owners.co.uk so don't quite feel i belong there.

I've become more of a lurker, occasionally jumping in if there is a question I think I can help with. My own modifications are glacial as for the last year I've had other more pressing family duties.
I also don't like FB. I don't think it suits this type of collaboration forum.
The covid kybosh to the annual meetup at Curborough has also reduced content here. I could not volunteer last year, but if it goes ahead this year I could volunteer again.

daydreamer Whats modifications should you be doing that you can't find the time for? oh boy, that's a whole thread in its own right. work done so far on the conversion to Cupra ( 240HP ) power plant engine mounts made and trial fitment of engine complete. new rear wishbones , 50mm longer, adjustable. new rear uprights made from billet alloy. new rear driveshaft spacers (50mm) fitted to vw gearbox flanges. ( now the wheels will not have spacers and the wheel bearings will be loaded correctly.) rear brake callipers and disks from lean cupra fitted correct way up so no hassle bleeding them. new front wishbone set made to suit lean cupra front uprights. new giant top hat fitment made to adapt front upright to twin wishbone operation. Kudos to anyone who can work that out without seeing a picture ( clue - lean cupra front upright is originally designed to be fitted to a Macpherson strut. ) Cupra epas steering rack fitted. ( yes it is heavy ) Cupra epas rack extensions ( note: not track rod extensions ) made and fitted to get rack knuckles in optimum position for bump steer. Rack is offset to get steering column in correct position for pedals, so rack extensions are unequal length. FYI - after much design and measurement, we have no measurable bump steer, and other parameters inc caster, camber gain, camber , scrub radius and Ackerman angles all sorted. ( that was many, many, months of back and forth with drawings and mock-ups) To do Steering column length adaption to cupra steering column. ( 90% complete ) Design and fit front diff, front driveshafts and inboard disk brakes. ( I'll just slip this in and see who twigs as to the significance of that ) Gear linkage extensions ( cupra gear stick already adapted to rear operation ) Fit cupra fuel pump find and fit suitable charge cooler in place of donor intercooler sort out engine plumbing and aftermarket airbox arrangement Adapt cupra wiring loom. I am sticking with donor loom , ecu and sub system electronics for EPAS, lighting and ABS. change to floor mounted pedal box fit cupra drive by wire throttle pedal. fit donor brake servo and ABS. ( although I am wondering if the front/rear bias will be ok ) Sticking with existing brake cylinders may be much simpler. adapt instrument binnacle make new exhaust to suit. adapt rear engine cover. ( more likely cut a giant hole in it and fit the cupra plastic engine cover/airbox arrangement.) The main problem with this is the engine oil fill cap will be exposed. ) Plus a hundred other things I have forgotten. we are slowly working through them all..

The forum setup is far more clunky an interface than the likes of facebook. The app isn't so much of an app than a trimmed down interface to the forum and doesn't allow quick interaction. It's an unfortunate consequence of the new generation of builders who have grown up around social media. They want instant replies and don't want to trawl through pages of build threads to find an answer to their issue which results in similar questions being asked (and answered) there. They rarely sit at a laptop to compose big long posts with updates, a simple couple of pictures and a one-line message is enough. Even adding a picture to a forum requires more than 1x click. Sadly the forum is a legacy platform which can't compete with the simplicity of the social media platforms. But don't worry, it's not going away, just quieter.

Well as a new builder, and for chasing the builds of others for hints and tips, the forum cannot be beaten. You can follow someone's build all the way through as well as documenting your own all in one place. I like to see that both exist but would want people to post their new builds and progress and the help is priceless. I need to carry on with my build soon as about to tear the engine down and look how deep I need to go for the rebuild. Once Iv made decent progress on that I will get updating again

mycarbuild.co.uk is more active, but thats now exo-owners.co.uk so don't quite feel i belong there. Out of interest, why do you feel you don't quite belong? Just from the name really, the old one while centred around rocket2, its name implied anyone was welcome to create a thread get involved. With the new name its clearly focused on EXO builds only.

Agree FB is easier, athough its too easy to just consume info there and not contribute too. Facebook doesn't include much sharing of info/progress and is better suited for specific questions. I guess all we can hope is people will share their progress to keep current and future builders interested and keep the kit car market alive! Too be honest its the build threads and what people have done that help inspire future builds not just just the demo vehicles.
