Don't throw away the steering wheel or the clockring behind it as you'll need it for the test, you just remove & disable the airbag. It's also worth hanging onto the lights until after you have thinned the loom down, don't ask me how I came to know this.

I can also recommend heartily not going too hard at the steering lock. And pay attention to the useless little round plastic thing around the key barrel. You might have to go to a scrappy and pay €25 for another useless ring of plastic otherwise. And on the Focus there's a little LED in the auxiliary instrument cluster you need too, I don't know if that applies to the MX-5 too though.
