Hello everyone, I seem to be struggling to make sense of altering the steering column length. After carrying out some research it thought,it looked like the part of the steering column you lengthen is the bottom part. Where the thicker part and the thinner part meet, buy my column is welded so can't be lengthened?. The top part of the column has a bearing on the bottom outer column,so that is fixed in position. I have seen the build guide showing the column being thumped with a hammer but can't see how this lengthens anything. How has everyone else got over this?. Any help would be appreciated. Shaggy m

If your column needs to be longer then the approach of thumping as shown in the guide actually moves the mounting point by reducing the length of the outer section of the column.

Thanks for the reply Stuart.so if you are shortening the outer column length how does this effect where the column bolts in as the length between the fixings has moved?.My column is at the correct length to bolt in or have I completely missed the point(probably)shaggy

I guess it would be easier to say the thumping action does not 'lengthen'. but moves the mounting bracket, so that you get more steering column on the engine bay side.
