Hi, I know this has a lot of different opinions and I've searched the threads and read loads on here and throughout the web but am genuinely concerned about my suspension. Car is still not driving yet but the chassis etc is all on and it rolls and steers.
I'm only looking for something simple for the NB 1999 1.8 that will clear the bananas and actually work.
I'm on new standard MX5 dampers and springs and with the frame on, two corners are not really sitting right, the springs not sitting in the cups properly (they were when assembled) and the top rubber bush thing is NOT under any tension with the top nut screwed all the way down!
I've seen a few folks run the TA Techniks ebay stuff and although low at the rear, the bounce seemed to be ok.
Then there's the Teins, which I really like the look of (just cause they are green and my car is green) but not sure if they will foul the front bananas / wishbones?
Cost is a bit of an issue but then I know the buy cheap buy twice quote. We just want to get it on the road, through IVA and enjoy weekend rides out around the coast etc.
Who's running what out there? Did you need to modify or cut more away from the wishbones? What ride height from ground to underside have you got?
Oh and another problem I've seen is that the rear anti-roll bar links to the bottom wishbone are really under stress and are sitting at a bad angle. This must be due to the current suspension?
Sorry if this has done the rounds over loads of years but it's better to ask and seek advice then throw more money at it and still not get something that doesn't bottom out or shake my liver out of my body.
Cheers, Rich and Cam

Hi mate, You'll get lots of different options and opinions so all I'll say is what I have and what thoughts I have.
I bought MSR's (MaxSpeedingRods) for £240, they are top adjustable for dampening and my current ride height is 11 or 12 cm. I drove it to MOT and to trailer pick up for IVA and I was impressed for the price. I made new bananas for a little extra clearance but also now have a set of the MEV wishbones which will eventually be swapped over. The MSR's come in red, silver and gold.
If I was going for higher price point I would always go to Protech (many colour options) as they are amazing people and know the Exocet. Ive run Gaz on other cars before and had leaks from them.
Just my opinion and experience so far
HTH

FWIW - I'm using Megan racing EZ Street coilovers and do not seem to need the shock spacers that Exomotive provides here in the states. They can be had for ~$600 or so, and after years of butt-dyno experience across many platforms I trust them to get the job done comfortably.

Cheers, Rich and Cam hi buddy, the real question is what are you going to be doing with the car when done? track or just road ? I have used standard mx5 shocks and springs and the ride is fab, its not low to the ground and with it being a lot lighter its quite firm so I think it was the best option for me as it wont be going on the track although it would be fine if it did. my mx5 came with Bilstein shocks and springs as standard so I would imagine mazda got it right ? cheers

Cheers im not sure but arn't after market coilovers are normally stiffer than standard and u normally have to wind them right up to get a good ride height for our roads (speed bumps etc) which then does not allow the shocks to work properly. have you thought about changing the springs to a softer set ? mine are just fine not too hard at all it drives really smooth and they are standard ?

It's the dampers too, they are designed for double the weight.

Ive got my ride height around 11-12 cm, rides great and are top adjustable for damping to stiffen or soften, its not actually the spring you wind up and is a very common mistake. You wind at the bottom for height and not the spring seat. If you do you will tighten the spring and its rate and have an awful ride.

HI Hammy, I am setting up my coilovers at the minute, where did you measure your ride height from? Chassis floor or actual subframe heights? I have it at 10cm at the minute from chassis floor. Cheers
