Hi. Wondered if any body could point me in the right direction with a issue i'm having with my rocket. iv;e got a standard 1.8 zetec with focus ecu, car will start straight away when cold but when up to temperature if i stop it will crank over but will not start, only after it as cooled down will it start, it will run all day with no problems if i don't stop it. From my limited technical knowledge it seems something is getting hot and sending a no start signal to the ecu on trying to start up. could it be a sensor that is disabling the spark?, i'm thinking possibly crankshaft sensor. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks John.

Is it the spark that is not there? or is it no fuel? Have you checked for a spark when it does this?

Hi Carl. Thanks for your reply, no haven't checked yet, iv'e tried to get it to do it today at home with the engine cover removed but couldn't get it to do it probably because the temperature around the engine wasn't as high with the cover removed. thanks John.

Sorry carl just seen you also mention (is it fuel), i'm assuming not as i can have it running and turn it off and immediately back on and it won't start, i would have thought the fuel rail would have held enough pressure to at least of given a splutter within those few seconds. Or am i mistaken thinking that?.

Re: Fuel rail retaining pressure, I'm not sure. Back on the lack of spark trail, I had an issue a while ago when I still had the engine cover on (rough idle and crap running) and while investigating it I found the coil pack had a crack in it! Not sure if it was from over heating or not but its something worth checking.

Yes somebody mentioned coil pack so will look at that next if i don't cure it with changing crankshaft sensor. thanks for your help

Is there any chance you can replicate this issue whilst close to a computer?
If so I have a troubleshooting flowchart from OMEX which might help although this assumes you have an OMEX ECU of course

Suggest you should test cylinder head temp sensor before spending money on coil packs as this could be telling your Ford ECU that engine is cold when not.

Hi Kiwicanfly, thanks for your reply, no can't do that iv'e got the standard focus ECU. Hi Stuart. Thanks for getting back to me, i had thought about that but assumed that if it was telling the ECU the engine was cold it would give it more fuel which wouldn't cause a complete no start scenario ( am i wrong in thinking this?) I've gone down the crankshaft sensor route after picking up some threads of people who have had a similar problem who have found it's been caused by contamination/metal filings on the end of the magnetic crankshaft sensor. When i removed mine there were filings on the end and a strand of wire across the sensor, so fitting a new one tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed that's the problem. thanks John.
