IVA & Catalytic Convertor.
Hi all, I have a 1994/1995 Mk1 1.8 IMPORT and I’m currently building my Exocet.
The V5 states no engine number present and on the engine itself, you cannot see the numbers at all, let alone when the wiring is fitted and it is inside the car. I cannot imagine any IVA tester being able to see any old MX5 engine codes when the engine is fitted. Firstly, when filling out my IVA form, what engine number do I put down? As I physically cant.
Secondly, of course, I’d love to run no CAT. If I went to Mazda and said can you confirm what year this was built and the engine number and had it in writing from Mazda, would this be sufficient for the IVA examiner to do me a non-cat test? How does it work? How do I go about proving this?
My question is; how do IVA testers go about confirming if it needs a CAT or not?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you in advance

You will need a cat unless the inspector can see an engine number that corresponds with a 1995 V5 or earlier. BUT you will at least feel better if you fit a cat as you will be helping to protect the hole in the ozone level and all that. ~_~

Find the flat space on block were the number should be.. Clean with brake clean let dry then go over the space with a black marker then rub the flat to get it off the surface you might then be able to see a number that is left in marker.. You will need a good light shined from the right angle. The flat space, look under the exhaust manifold rear. I have seen some on the intake side..

Gently rubbed until number was just discernible but still very difficult to read with naked eye. So took pic with phone and zoomed in and it is much clearer to read. Glad to say it tallied with the engine no. on V5c. Academic anyway as being a year 2000 engine will be subject to the full cat test at IVA.

But I don't have a engine number to put on my document.
I've tried cleaning it.
What option do I have?

Are you absolutely sure there is no engine no.?
They are very lightly stamped/etched and any corrosion will easily hide it. I was convinced that mine had no number but a little patience and gentle abrading/cleaning eventually revealed it (with the aid of a decent torch!)
If you really do not have an engine number, then you will not be able to verify its age and will be subject to the full cat test at IVA. Does your donor have a cat fitted? if so and assuming you're using the standard ECU etc. then you shouldn't have a problem passing the emissions test anyway.
You could always stamp your own engine no. on the block and use that to populate the box on the form.

With no engine number I think your car would be assigned a Q registration plate when you register it. I am not 100% sure on this. I think the identification only comes into play when you are registering it, which will be a problem. In theory the engine (and by association the car) could have been stolen if you have no engine number on the block or V5. I would speak to DVLA about this.

Absolutely sure there is no engine number on logbook or engine itself.
I've tried cleaning it and I've just ordered some etching gel to try and see it but I don't think it will
I have a chassis number and the car has been on the road since 2000 when imported. But the first date registered in U.K. Was 1995. V5 in my name.
Any advice would be very helpful on this.

I covered this yesterday in my post above. You have a donor V5, you don't have numbers on the diff or steering or axles or engine but you will declare them as being from the donor that you present the V5 from, no Q plate.
If you are concerned then get a stamp set and stamp a number on the block, send off the V5 and get it added on.
On a more positive note the first sets of G-type body panels will be finished on Friday. One set has "aterro" on it. Black chassis being collected from powder coaters in 8 hours 14 mins.

Sorry I didn't really understand what I needed to do but thank you for clarification. That sounds amazing! Really looking forward to seeing it!

My Donor engine had a different engine number stamped on it to the one in the V5. Apparently Honda swapped the engine under warranty but the owner didn't update the V5. I spoke to DVLA and they said I needed a letter from Honda stating the above. I did that and they added the new engine number. I don't know if they just take your word for it when adding a new number though?
