Maybe someone can help with any ideas, I want to buy some tool machines and the best price is from Pella us, but the shipping is still $380 or so, no dout i will then be striped up for import tax or vat etc,, anyone got any ideas of another way of doing this, any US members coming over here with a large suitcase Scott

Are there savings to be had if it is shipped directly from a private individual rather than a company? If it is individual-to-individual, are there less tax/vat consequences?

Not really on the customs forms you have to put the value of the item even if its done as a gift they can charge import duty and tax
usually anything under £80-100 in value you can get away without paying duty but over that theres a good (probably about 80%) chance of having to pay duty, duty and tax add around 23% to the cost
ive been lucky before and had orders of £400 come through with no duty to pay but also had orders of £30 that needed to pay duty
