Just a quick tip for anyone getting their Cat C donor VIC checked before dismantling. If your car has been sitting for sometime, like mine has, remember to check the battery charge. I jumped the car to load it onto the trailer this morning, got to the centre in plenty of time, to be told they could not test the car if it needed jumping - it needed to start with the turn of a key. Because the battery was so flat, I could not get it to hold enough charge. I managed to get another appointment for the same day (after paying the £41 fee again!), a quick trip home, stole the battery from my Seat, back to the station and 10 mins later had my VIC pass. Positive news from today was, my V5 will be with me next week.

It's a good idea to get a VIC check for a Cat C, I had not thought of that. Just to add to the confusion I built my rocket from a Cat C with no VIC check and still got an age related plate, but others have had problems. Getting a VIC checkis a good idea and is £41 well spent (especially if you only have to spend it once)
Shame about the battery
Cheers

So you buy a damaged Cat-C car and then repair the damage and take it for a VIC check? guessing you have to make good the damage so the car is at least safe and driveable yes?

I was lucky enough that my Cat C had only had a mild rear end shunt. None of the lights were broken (they will not test is there is broken glass/lights), and it was just the bumper and back-door that were damaged. Technically it would have still got an MOT without doing anything. All a VIC check is meant to be looking for is if the car and engine are still the original, not if it is road worthy (but it must be safe to drive). This is where the rules can be interpreted differently by each station. What constitutes "safe". The guy at mine (Leighton Buzzard) had not arguments with assessing my car (apart from the battery issue outlined above). The actual test took less than 5 mins (+10mins for the paper work). For me it was worth a day of running around, as I now have the V5 document to aid my bid for an age related plate.

Thanks, that all makes perfect sense.
