This is interesting. You are here in Britain, so it will be MUCH cheaper than if you were in USA. Kits direct from MEV are cheaper and our rusty donors are only a few hundred quid.
Mine cost about £6000, on the road, with IVA carried out by Road Track Race. Had I taken it to IVA myself, it would have been quite a bit less. I bought the car once the donor had been stripped, so I didn't sell any bits - not that they now sell for much anyway.
If (when?) I do it again - I would buy a donor for it's spec and in the best mechanical condition I could find. The specs do vary quite a bit, model to model. I think I'd look for the latest 1.8 with LSD and big brakes I could find. I would look for an accident damaged car.
Motorhog and Copart salvage auctions, frequently have very lightly damaged MX5s going through and they sell very cheaply. There have been quite a few with hard tops over the last few months. They can sell for £300+! Written off cars have normally been on the road very recently and are normally not rusty MOT failures. Category D write offs don't need a VOSA VIC inspection and so the paperwork is totally straightforward.

Golden86 Thank you for the spreadsheet which is a useful indicator of exactly what you felt needed to be replace. I know my list will be different but I am sure there is a lot of commonality.
Toed64. That auction is interesting and yes I can totally see why I don't want a very rusty example.

My MX150R cost approx. £5500 to get it completed. Including all the race bits needed like proper FIA seat, extinguisher, 6 point belt etc. If you're putting it on the road budget for bits of trim, covers, non-sharp edges and all that plus the test fee.
It comes down to if you want to do it on a budget, or have it show-ready. Me, I want to drive the thing and aren't too fussed about the exterior, hell it only gets bumped when your team mate doesn't get out of your way and you have the inside line hehe

I spent a few moments adding up all of my receipts up to this point. It was a little depressing. It started off as a budget build, and now is right at $25,552 plus or minus a few hundred, and not including tax/title/reg. I think I'll have a drink now. . .

Steadfast, your number is pretty much what I've budgeted so am glad to see I'm in the ballpark.
The main part of my budget is getting the frame itself to me CA. Here's what my number looks like:
Sport Kit $7,500 Weldin Floor $300 Fender / Fender Mount $500 ( required for SB100 ) Wing Mounts $400 Windshield $350 ( required for SB100 ) Powdercoating $600 Bodywork $2,400 ( required for SB100 ) Crating $300 Shipping $600-$900
Total of that is just around $13k depending on shipping rate. Though now I'm wondering if I should just get the frame coated locally at the same time as my suspension parts so I'm 100% sure they'll match colorwise and perhaps save a few pennies.

Bare chassis should be cheaper/easier/less risky to ship...

One problem with that though is I don't really have a vehicle to transport the kit to the local powder coater.

I got. Them to collect and return. Cost a little bit but worth getting a quote and working it out.

Nice .. I didn't think of that.
Now that seems like my best option then especially to make sure everything is color matched.

My budget is $30,000 USD and I've already committed $17,725. Here's how I've spent my money so far: - $10,300: race chassis with APR wing + mounts, fenders, wire tray, windshield bezel
- $3,500: donor
- $1,000 in tools and supplies that I didn't already have (needed a proper tool chest, proper jack, and engine hoist)
- about $3,500 in new parts including all new suspension from FM and big brake kit
- estimate another $8k to cover shipping, powder coating, and other parts (seats, harnesses, lights, fuel cell, engine seals, etc) that I haven't yet purchased
My wish list is short but is another $5k (FM turbo, new radiator, new diff).

Here's a spreadsheet from early in the project that has not been updated since July 2014. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pZgAJmypZOW9m_wQLfh8hTACUDpC47u9gTpGGIqaF18/edit?pli=1#gid=342761376We have since blown that number out of the water and are just finishing the build now and moving into the "improve it" phase which will last forever. On the positive side, we have a car that is d**n near totally new, from suspension bolts and bushings to complete new brakes to interior bits, etc.. Finally being able to drive it - and most of us build these things on faith without a test drive - I'm questioning my sanity less. Edit: I should probably make it clear that my donor situation was a bit strange. I bought a '96 beater with '84K miles for $2,600 and sold a bunch of parts including the hardtop. That was the base donor for the Exocet. Then I found a really nice '94R down in South Carolina with a turbo and bought that with the idea that I'd restore that to dead stock, pulling the turbo and a bunch of other go-fast parts off for the Exocet. The Exocet project has run way behind schedule, but I've had the '94R as a daily summer driver so that's worked out pretty well.

phocup, the kit comes with the bodywork. I think the $2400 is the CF upgrade that may or may not still be available. I haven't totaled receipts recently. I'm trying to minimize that number in my head. Needless to say it is probably on par with the rest of the US turbo builds if I'm honest about all the small part costs, tools, truck rentals etc. I did however opt to go turbo up front and spec out nice shocks, upgraded sways, upgraded bushings, new turbo parts, nice seats etc. etc.

Jmills, yeah I finally figured that out. The $2400 for CF isn't a bad deal if its good enough quality to go with the naked carbon look and save some paint cost.
