This thread contains Important Builder Guidance and is 'stickied' so it stays there for all to see. It represents information gleaned primarily from owner builds that have met and surmounted unforseen obstacles. It will be of great help. (Further information)
Important - to be read in conjunction with the Rocket build guide.
1. The front suspension upright caster angle is adjustable, 12 degrees is the design maximum.
2. Ride height, damper rates, corner weighting and camber/castor/tracking/tyre choice need careful consideration.
3. The fuel pump assembly should be sealed with hylomar and the Focus tank pump base plate should be used.
4. A fuel pump inertia cut off switch should be fitted as standard.
5. Owners are advised to fit a brace bar between the left/right 12mm pivot bolts of the front lower wishbones. (Tech Sect Link)
6. A brace bar should be considered between lower rear wishbone 12mm pivot bolts if output exceeds 130 ft lbs.
7. Track/race cars should have 3 reinforcing plates (6x25mm) on the back of the rear uprights to resist bending.
8. Builders should ensure that the thread on adjustable wishbones is screwed in at least 1.5 times the diameter.
i.e an 18mm thread should be screwed in 27mm. Alloy camber adjuster sleeves should not be used, they crack!
9. Builders should check the front top & bottom ball joints do not reach binding point when suspension reaches it's travel limit. This is checked by removing the springs and refitting the shock, then push the shock up to it's bump stop and down to full droop ensuring there is still easy articulation movement in the ball joints.
The correct taper and thread length is of paramount safety importance. I urge all MEV enthusiasts to be on the lookout for joints without enough thread through the nyloc. ..........
These parts are from the 60's and so the original Quinton Hazel parts are no longer available but are now made in China and supplied by Rally Design.
Top ball joints for most kit cars are from a 1969-1982 Ford Transit, Ford part number 17996516, Or QH number QD1117 RHT (right hand thread).
Bottom ball joints for most kit cars are from a 1965-1984 Austin Maxi, QH part number QSJ602
