Hi, just thought I'd say hello. I'm just about to undertake my first kit car build of a Rocket. I have decided to use an ST170 for the donor car, been told it's a bit more challenging then a normal 2ltr Zetec on the ECU side of things, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carlos,
I've been through the trials and tribulations of the ST170 install.

Hi Guys
Thank you for the reply's. The kit has been ordered and I've started to strip the donor car, hoping to get the engine out this weekend. I've not got any questions yet but I'm sure there will be plenty to come. Just for your info I'm an electronics engineer so if you have any electronics related questions I'd be happy to help if I can.

Out of interest what are you plans? are you going to use the stock engine/ECU/Fuel pump etc?

Hi Ade
My plans are to keep things as stock as possible so yes stock engine/ECU/fuel pump. I am going to change the timing belt, tensioner pulleys etc. so thanks for the heads up on the timing side of things, what makes it such a PITA? I've read lots about the IMRC unit and the problems with the contacts etc. so I was planning to give it a good overhaul. I've also heard that you can have problems with the returnless fuel pump system but I've not decided which way to tackle it yet, is there particular reasons why the stock system doesn't work well?

I'll dig out the guide I used but basically the vvt gear holds oil pressure and the ford guide tells you to loosen the gear... this is not the way with the st engine it causes loads of grief.. The stock fuel pump in the sender tends to fail due to the way the st engine pulses to maintain pressure and this wears them out... either use a whole different sender or upgrade the pump in the sender like i did.
Also don't forget the diaphragm into the sender, take it out.

Have fun! and if in doubt DONT CUT IT OFF Scraped knuckles eh, its the use of engine oil and gunk as a coagulant that i loved! left a nice oil tattoo in the wound/scar. Ade
