Hi all,
Just finished the wiring. With a bit of head scratching finally got the engine to turn over and fire. It's runs but the coil pack gets hot to the point it starts smoking and near enough melting!
I've checked the wiring and pin 2 is getting 12v when ignition is on and the other two wires go to the ecu (when they are disconnected it fails to start) so all seems ok? So massive confused. It actually starts getting hot and smoking when the ignition is turned on, engine not even running.
So kinda stumped at the mo so any help would be good
Thanks in advance. Adam

Hi Adam,
Just had a look at the wiring diagram, and yeah your right
Pin 2 GN/BU - 12volt feed Pin 1 BK/OG - to pins 26 or 58 on ECU (depending on ECU) Pin 3 BK/GN - to pins 52 or 59 on ECU (depending on ECU)
I think I would be inclined to try another coil pack. Re check your wiring and make sure nothings shorting out anywhere. I can't really see what else it could be.
Is yours an early Focus with the ignition transformer capacitor next to the coil pack(a little white box). This is only for suppression but check that wirings all ok and not touching anything( the feed for that comes off the same wire as pin 2 to the coil pack)
Hope you sort it.
Jake

Hi jake. Thanks for the reply. Went back and checked everything with my volt meter and found the problem with the black orange cable. Seems I messed up I'd actually connected the black orange from the airflow meter to the Ecu and earthed the coil pack one.....DOH! Changed them round and pleased to report the coil pack has stopped melting ..... Result Thanks for your reply Adam

The coil pack will be dead soon, more than likely. You managed to wire one of the coil pack inputs (either 1-4 or 3-2) direct to an earth (instead of wasted spark ecu output - pulsed earth), and 12v feed.
Effectively, the coil should only be on for milliseconds at a time. Higher durations overheat damage the internals. Its been on for a sustained period, and dmamaged the windings.
Id grab another from a scrapyard, or new. For what it costs. Even if it runs ok for now, it may be weaker sparks it produces. ( poor emmsisions etc)
I may have some spare somewhere, if the style of coil is the same.

Thanks for the reply Steve,
Thought that already and ordered a new set already. There was a bit of smoke coming from them so figured best i change them.
Cheers Adam
