Afternoon guys, i am having a nightmare day today. i have been away for 2 weeks and this afternoon after a long day at work i went to my garage to destress by working on my car. This was a bad idea. Having worked perfectly before i went away, i thought i would drive it in the garage and carry on working on it. jumped in started it up but it instantly cut out.
I have checked the fuel, the MAF and the ECU using various forums. all seem ok. the main relay seems to be ok as well as i took the black cap off and it all moves fine.
so it will start and run for about 5 seconds then dies.
also i have noticed that the battery warning light does not come on when the key is in the ignition. it is not the immobiliser as this will not allow the engine to turn over if active.
Has anyone got any ideas? i have got the battery on charge now, but cant imagine it is this as why would it start at all if the battery was dead?
any help much appreciated. B

Not trying to make you feel stupid but is there any fuel in the tank sounds like its starting with the vapours in the lines then dying due to no fuel.

Does your car have the MX5 chipped ignition key? Later cars had chips in the keys and I have read that if the car cannot read the key chip, it will run for a few seconds and then cut out... Perhaps there is a fault with the key chip or the car transponder.
Good luck.

COuld it be a loose earth, last time my car did not start it was due to the earth from the battery to the PPF being loose.

There is at least 2 litres of fuel in the tank. After last time I know to check that ;-). It is a 91 1.6 with a retro fit immobilizer. I have rules this out as when I take the little dongle.thing away, the car won't even turn over. I have checked all the earths and all seen solid. I did find a thread which a guy had all the same problems as me and it was his igniter box so I found one of them for a tenner to try. I just think it is weird that the battery light isn't coming on. I hope I haven't broken a wire somewhere... Anybody selling a loom? :-(

Good luck with the new box...if that doesn't cure it, bridge out the after market immobiliser - just to see what goes.

does it run with a spray of starter fluid in intake.. do the injectors click when trying to start, use long screwdriver to ear to hear.. what is your fuel pressure at fuel rail.. do you have a blue spark when checking spark plugs earthed to cam cover.. don't rotate engine with ign wires off plug and not earthed it will blow the igniter.. check power to ECU..

Haha, yes, there is definately fuel in it!!!
So it turns out that the igniter box was faulty, and a wire from the instrument cluster to the main loom was not quite seated properly. I had made the mistake of removing the igniter from its metal holder. turns out you shouldnt do this. So now the car runs absolutley fine (except a lot of white smoke at higher rpm) but the tacho has stopped working? any suggestions.
also what are people doing with exhausts? the standard one is difficult to suspend at the rear. i was thinking of getting a centre exit cherry bomb and a short (about a foot) of flexi pipe.

Tach gets it's power from the igniter check yellow/blue (Y/L) wire.. ign>large connector(front to dash) >top of gage/cluster connector.. isn't wiring fun (at times) wait till you wake from a sound sleep with the answer to a problem.. been there done it.. glad you are up and running..
