Hi All
Body come off at the weekend and the engine has a few leaks, i was thinking about stripping the engine and replacing all the main gaskets (head, rocker, exhaust etc)
Any recommendations on a reasonably priced kit?
is the XS racing on ebay worthwhile and do I need anything else
Thanks in advance all - i have a 1.8 mk1

How many miles on the engine.. if nearing 100 I would do the timing belt and water pump.. Why are you doing the head gasket is it leaking..what compression reading do you have and leak down readings.. if you do head gasket have a shop check for trueness and valve condition.. if you have head off do valve stem seals, CAS, cam seals too..

Hi
Engine has done 100k and there is oil all over the place, I havent had a chance to look at where it is coming from or run a compression check but was planning on doing the belts, water pump and gaskets with a head skim. not a bottom end rebuild as it just costs to much
was really hoping for someone to say this is a good kit that is tried and tested at a reasonable price.
thanks for the response
whats CAS?
Thanks

I would try and work out were the oil is coming from first. It could well just be the rocker cover gasket. mx5 parts is were i get all my stuff.

The most likely culprit for oil leaks is the CAS. If the oil's all down the back of the engine and over the gearbox this is what it'll be. It's worth doing the cambelt and water pump anyway and you need to take the cam cover off for these, this gasket could also easily have failed. I've done the CAS o-ring and am going to do the cambelt and water pump but not go any further.

Hi
I went with the XS racing kit a few months ago as i replaced the head gasket, water pump and timing belt purely because the engine had done 100,000 miles. Everything that came off was in pretty good condition but i figured i want it to last another 100,000 mile and dont want to have to build this thing twice!
I can fully recommend the XS gasket kit. it seemed top quality and everything fitted perfectly.
