Not the furry kind but the exhaust gas kind...
.......has everyone whose donor car had one kept it? Ours was a W-reg so we'll be tested to the later regs but it would be nice to do without it. Let me know if you got away without one, swapped it for a bypass then swapped back for the test or maybe even used the ID from an older car to get away without it. All options I'm considering.
thanks,
Lad.

I asked similar questions and was advised to use a cat for IVA, even though my donor was a 1989 car. This is because VOSA will not necessarily accept the 1989 car's V5 as proof of the age of the engine. They have adopted this approach specifically to stop people avoiding the use of cats.

as a rule, if the car orignally had a cat fitted its best to leave it on for IVA and/or MoT's - mot is not as strict hence on older cars they often take them off. once its passed the IVA its up to you wether you bypass the cat or not.
however attempting to use the ID of another car would be considered false, if not illegal!

My 1991 based exocet does not have a cat on at the moment and the exhaust does smell strong! I am going to put it back on this week hopefully it will make a big difference, I will be leaving it on for the iva to cover myself just in case.

Thanks toed64 - that's a pretty definitive answer.
For the record - surely something is only illegal if you can prove its illegal and once the shell's gone the rest has no ID (except for the engine which you can legally change).

Why risk doing something illegal, when you only have to have the cat on for one day!!!

IMO......this is an open forum, which as such is probably not the best place to discuss ways of attempting to buck the system, surely if the intention is to build a vehicle and take it for IVA then the best way to achieve this is to do it by the book, I don't know if inspectors read forums like this but if they did would it possibly not have an adverse effect on how the marque was viewed within the industry?

quote from online "Cars registered after 1st August 1992 (i.e. K prefixes onwards) are required by law to have catalytic converters". If its fitted to the car already, just leave the standard exhaust system on, get the iva done and then change, id rather spend the £90 towards a shiney new exhaust system than paying for the retest thats what i plan on doing, but if your old system is knackered and needs changing anyways then i can see why you wouldnt want to fit it if its not needed.

I do agree that we're all here to keep the IVA man happy and that's what we'll do. Our old system looks tatty but seems fine inside so yeah, it'll go on for one day and I'll drop the point about the legality. It's not always possible to get your point across on forums without it being misconstrued.

Just to further add, it does appear that they can trace the age/id of the engine with the original vin - as a couple of guys reported when they swapped out an engine during a build causing a problem during inspection regarding proof of origins.
One of the things you need to prove as well when it comes to register it for the road in order to obtain an age related plate.

Hi All,
A lot of the Imports don't have engine numbers on the docs, like mine but mine is an early 1990 Mk1 and still has the SNC engine which should be plain that it is the original engine. I will try and find an engine number once the engine is out and get it put on the docs. I still have my cat but it was and is not fitted. I don't plan on fitting it.

The fact is that if your engine number is illegible then you have no way of proving that your engine is from the donor on your V5 although that may show a 92 pre cat car. The IVA inspector will then have no option but require a cat.
