Finally got around to re-rewiring the Exocet this morning with the replacement loom. Within 10 mins it was sorted, surprising how easy it becomes after having done it few times! I fired her up and it started instantly but then cut out after a few seconds. I tried it a few more times and each time it did the same. Unless i held the revs pretty high it cut out. At the moment ive been unable to attach one relay (unsure which one right now as im away from the car) due to the plug on the new loom not fitting into the relay ive got (unless im doind the dopey thing of trying the wrong plug!). Could this be the cause of the engine cutting out? The only other thing difference now compared to when i had it running fine with the previous loom is that ive also removed the petrol feeder pipe. Would this cause a fuelling issue in regards to the tank no longer being completely sealed? Any advice or ideas are welcome

is the fuel pump priming and running? have you checked manifold pressure?
if you start it and hold down the pedal will it stay running?
is deff a fuel issue it sounds

relays worth a look at - some of them have feeds to the fuel etc - you defo have the wrong one in there somewhere

MAF / AFM sensor whatever you want to call it, common issue, a friend of mine took his off when working on his car, put it on the bench and then when refitting it would start and then cut out.

That's why I asked if he holds down the pedal if it runs but rough. That would throw to the maf or cas that is misadjusted
We need more info

Thanks for the input so far guys. Spent a bit of time on the car today and can now add some more info......
As long as i hold down the accelerator the engine runs although very roughly sounding, the moment i release the pedal it cuts out.
I havent got the timer and buzzer relay connected due to the fact that my replacement loom's plug doesnt fit in the relay i have. Im assuming there is more than one size timer and buzzer relay for the mk1....although i may be wrong.
Edited to add - ive just looked into what the timer and buzzer is for and pretty sure this aint the cause of the start/stopping issue.

Sounds like your MAF then like H5ngs mentioned
or your timing is off, one of the two. But im leaning to maf

Do you have aMAF or an AFM ?? do you have enough fuel in the tank..is the fuel cut relay hooked up.. timer buzzer won't cause this problem..

So assuming its a MAF/AMF issue what is the remedy?

I replaced mine. I found a thread somewhere (can't find it now) that mentioned jumpering two pins together. When I did that the car ran fine. So the fix was to replace the maf/afm.
