Hi All. When i bought my donor car i know the engine may not be working and i would have to source a repacement. I have gone for the same 1.6 engine but i am now a bit worried about the IVA.
I have 2 options
Send the V5c away with the new engine number and hope they do not ask ot see the car as it will never be an MX5 again
or
Do they check the engine number when doing the IVA? it is in the most stupid pisition and now not readable as i coverd it in two coats of paint before realising it was there?
Your advice would be apreciated.

Not too sure about your best course of action but, to answer your other question, yes, they do check it during the IVA.
If the DVLA decide to inspect your car then they will also want to check it.
I'm sure I saw a previous post about this a while back, could be worth a search?
Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve, thanks for the advice, Iam going to send off the V5c with the new engine number. Acording to the DVLA website they do not need to see the car and only need further details if the CC Capacity is changed, in this case i have not gone for the 1.8 and stayed with the 1.6 so should be ok.
My only problem now is that i have put 2 layers of heat proof paint over the number before i realised were it was. Wet and dry sandpaper session tomorrow!

you could build the old block back up with the new engine's parts and ancillaries (assuming the issue isnt with the block) best to follow the letters though and send in the new engine on to the v5c.

Hi Alexander, the block was the problem, and is long gone I am going to write to the DVLA and explain the situation.

do you have access to the v5c that the replacement engine came from? if so, there are no identifying marks on the chassis to show its not the original chassis/engine coupling. so use the new engine and old (original) chassis and use the v5c from the new engine's car.
if not id go with applying for an engine swap first. its highly unlikely they'll check anything further as they'll assume its a standard (complete and roadworthy) MX5 with a straight forward swap, (they have no reason to think its in bits) and as its 1.6 for 1.6 there will be absolutely no problem. Ive been involved with various engine swaps (back when i was a boy racer) and they never looked at the car. thy're more likely to want more details if they know your plans with it, and why you need the change, and the facts its in bits. swap the engine details on the v5c asap, as it wont be looked at again until the cars in for its IVA and by then it'll all be done and dusted with the DVLA.
