I encountered my first major problem today (well I think it is anyway!) I was attempting to split the rear diff from the front-to-rear section. There are two 17mm bolts which go up into captive collars at the top. One of the captive collars has broken free and is now turning. I don't think the bolt's undone at all. Any advice gratefully received. Maybe best to leave it together now, and clean around it?

You have two options. You can grab a pry bar and pull the underside of the 17mm head and pull the top back into its seat, or you can drop the whole thing as one unit and take care of it then. Either way it's not that bad. If you need a picture of what you are trying to get back into its seat, then let me know.

Many thanks, that's very useful. A picture would be really helpful. However I think I'll struggle to get a pry bar under the bolt head as it's still extremely tight. I think the collar started moving before it had undone at all. I'm guessing if there's an aluminium locator, that's what's broken.

Done it! Thanks again for your help. It led me to think that perhaps it was loosened off a bit. Having got the rear subframe off I took time clamping some mole grips firmly onto the captive nut and it worked a treat. Now I've just got to free up all the seized bolts on the wishbones... onwards and upwards
