OK, the day was fantastic. Again no cooling problems, so looks like that problem has definitely been put to rest, and no other issues all day really, apart from many other people coming off, breaking down or worse, like the guy who radically re-designed his radical... Several times we only got a couple of laps under our belts before the dreaded red flag came out again! There were also 3 suprcharged atoms there (about 300bhp each I was told). Certainly much quicker than us, but for about £30k more than a rocket, and using slick tyres, I should thinks so. Oh and their rear wings look very familiar... Did they have any more fun than us though? Nah! Quite a few caterhams, as you'd expect, but this time they weren't going past us, and the Rocket's definitely much better under braking, although we did have to move over a couple of times for something called a Stealth B6... ;-) Even managed to keep up with a porsche 911 turbo at one point ;D In car video coming shortly... Oh and some people! They just turn up in any old crap...

Hi,,
Looks like a cracking day!
In the end, what made the difference with your cooling problems? or was it a sort of combination of several tweaks?
Cheers,
Ol

This is the history of it - www.mevowners.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rocket&action=display&thread=1526Basically, most of the mods make a serious difference. Removing the grille, boxing in the floor and blocking the gap over the top of the rad are what helps prevent the temperature getting too hot in the first place, and the kenlowe really takes care of things when the temp starts to climb a bit. Off the track, the kenlowe is only ever needed in sitting traffic. The other mods ensure the engine always runs cool. On track the old ford fan just couldn't cope. Yesterday we got to an indicated max. of 117mph (5% out with our smaller track wheels), which is about 111mph in reality, and with no problems to deal with, the car was running all day. Cooling wise we didn't see anything over 98'c and I think that's the hardest the car has been run yet.

It handles quite well in the dry, but we really haven't started playing with the adjustable dampers yet. They're all set on the softest setting, which means we get superb traction in any gear, but the nose does dip a bit under really heavy braking on our trackday wheels, which are only 15" (i think from memory), so occasionally the chin gets scuffed on the tarmac. The biggest thing we've done is get some track biased tyres (Toyo R888's).
The 15" wheels help too, as the whole car is a good couple of inches lower than it is in road trim, and you can really feel it. Last time out we had 8cm clearance at the front and 11cm at the rear. Whether this does anything for downforce with it having a flat floor, I dunno. If we can get hold of some cheap pressure sensors we might start playing with ride height to see what effect that has.
We did a LOT of work playing with the brakes to get the balance right, (we have special mintex pads on the back), and to get good pedal feel. One of the most important things on track is good brake pedal feel as it really inspires your confidence.
The wings affect it quite a bit too. The front is set to max, and the rear about half. We took it out in the wet with just the rear wing, before we fitted the front, and had a HUGE moment on a dual carraigeway at about 50mph when the steering pretty much disappeared...

Actually Mabbs, one of the reasons our experience is a bit different, is because we bought our Mev, pretty much finished, specifically as a trackday car, and we wanted something different from the usual caterhams. We've done Oulton Park 3 times this year now, and the boss wants to go once more, but I think it's pushing it with the weather...
