Im in the process of strippping the MX5 and while doing so alos buying all the other bits i need (steering wheel, mirrors etc) but kinda stuck on the lights. Its starting to get a bit confusing. Ive seen some headlights that i fancy that are e-marked and mot compliable but then states they may not pass the IVA . Also are motorbike indicators ok to use at the front and the sides or are these too small? Are daytime running lights required aswell? And one final question has anyone got any pics of the complete lighting set that MEV supply?

Mathew, Ive built a kit and IVA'd it, and now starting a second. In terms of headlights, its a tricky one. The lights cant have any sharp edges (2.5mm curved edge) and must angle away from the traffic. I also think they need the approved markings you mention. If its got an E mark I think they deem them ok, as he didn't check anything that was E marked for edges, surface areas, functionality etc. All they do is put a big lense in front of each headlight and see what pattern it shines through on the chart behind it. you can either have a straight line to the top of light thats emitted, angled away from the traffic, or have a stepped straight line, again away from the traffic. the good thing is they appreciate you cant check this at home so will let you adjust mid test. Motorbike indicators are fine, used them on the front and as side repeaters, the only downside is that they will have a different resistance to the normal car indicators and will flash much faster (failing an IVA). I just stuck an extra set of car bulbs in the circuit and hid them away in some tubing to solve that issue. Daytime running lights arent a requirement yet, but you will still need main beam, headlights, and sidelights. I swapped the sidelights for a strip of LED's and this was fine for the IVA. If your thinking of sourcing headlights, get them from a kitcar website (or do what I do and research the ones you want from a reputable company and then hunt around for the cheapest seller) lighting from mev consists of 4x orange indicator lights and bulbs. 2x brakelight and rear running light combined plus bulbs, 1x fog light and bulb, 1x rev light and bulb, 2x headlights with dip and main, and sidelights. have a look at my build for pics of what they look like. In my honest opinion, the lights are a bit cheap and are the only part to let this great kit down, I'll use the headlights, but stick bike indicators all round and source some led running lights and brake lights for this kit.
hope this helps.

right ive finally found some rear lights that i like but they are single units so will need to mount them somehow......soooooo my next question is who, if anyone, supplies 'pods'. Ive found a few but they are a sort of design that still require to be mounted on a flat surface. The sort im after is 3 fixed vertical pods. Im thinking i may end up having to fabricate something myself but hopefully someone knows of a supplier of a similar product.
