I thought my build would come in around £10K, I'm i right for a new reg you can only use either new or a few recondition parts, ie gearbox. if this is right an engine and recon gearbox would come in around £ 1K, the IVA is the same price either donar age or new reg, so I'm i right in thinking a new reg is approx £ 1K more? I have brought new brakes etc etc

I think it depends on what the donor parts look like. A lot of the bits my donor car were in a poor state so had to by new items and by the time you do that it just starts to look a lot better and you don't really want to put old bits on.
That's when the price starts to rise and budgets start to get smashed.
I have a brand new 2.0 litre engine and gearbox, only using donor drive shafts, steering wheel lock/bracket thing and rear calipers everything else should be new.
Doing it this way, £12K sounds about right. Remember you need wheels, tyres, seats, lights, dash(of some kind), exhaust, brake lines just to name some items and Finally IVA at £450. But if your building you own car you want to do it right and with quaity components that you wont have to change in a few years.

Yeah that sounds about right, we have just completed two rockets using new bits for new reg. Dont forget your first registration fee and road tax as well that adds another few quid right at the end when you think you're all spent out lmao......

I'm sure that when RTR build or put a car through the IVA test that they are using some items from donor cars. When I visited them they were in the process of building a rocket, they had a recon gearbox and a new engine. As long as anything you use from the donor car has been cleaned up and painted if needed, to look new then there shouldn't be an issue (just keep all receipts for anything you buy). Paul at RTR told me they haven't had any issues getting new registrations doing this. That's why I will probably take my completed rocket to them for the IVA.

hey all, All in, including the IVA test (and re-test!), insurance, extra tools I needed and all the bits I bought twice for various reasons... I think £12k is nearer the true cost of my build... although I was completely useless at selling the bits off my donor (I still have half the interior in my shed 2 YEARS after I stripped them out!) .. If I could afford to do it again (and the Mrs would let me) I would probably go down the new engine/re-con gearbox route and register it as a new car - after all 90% of the car was new! but stripping the donor and cleaning the engine and generally getting the chance to get oily leaves me with fond memories!!! I've built mine from totally new parts and have accounted for every nut & bolt. I have used minimul second hand parts. All I can say it was a right pain building from new.. The build part is fine, its just sourcing the bits & working out what you need or are missing. This is why I am logging all the bits, part numbers etc as hopefully I can help others on a new build. I think the RTR Rocket build manual is only a very rough guide and should be heavily updated. I tried to use mine but threw it away its that bad. Its ok on some things but misses out alot. RTR kit in a box is a more realistic figure compared to what people think they can build 1 for. I'll have a propper tot up over the next few weeks and let you know.

Just to add to this discussion, I built my car nearly four years ago and on a very strict budget. I used as many second hand components as i could, even stripping the loom out of the donor car to reuse the wire and making my own exhaust to use the donor cat. In the end my cost was £7k. It is possible to build a rocket on a budget, but I think it is easier and better to build it new if you can afford to. unfortunately my pockets are not the deepest, so I continue to fettle to get my car where i want it.
Cheers
