I have a customer asking for advice as to his issue. Richards Exocet starts, runs for 2 seconds and then dies. This was covered somewhere, can't find it, never had this problem, anyone remember where it is on this forum, there was a link to a Miata site I think, possibly coil pack failure.

I have no idea on MX5's but other car sometime have a relay for the fuel pump which pack up. If I have any cars that dont start I try easystart, if the engine runs you know its a fuel issue, if not its a electrical issue. Gives you a good guide to start looking.

Being the customer in question i thought i should add my bit.
Everything has been checked on the engine including ECU fuel pump, CAS, MAF, earth pionts, the works. As it happens though today i discovered that the leads from the little black box on the ignition barrel (this is a 96 chipped key model and has an immobolizer fitted) which registers the key code, are going to a plug that is not attached to anything, obviously it should be abnd could well explain why the engine keeps cutting out apon start up.
Question is what should it be attached to, it is grey, female with about 6/7 connection points. please don't say it is the immobolizer transponder as this will leave me with all sorts of problems and i thought that was the little black box under the ignition barrel.
The car was a 1.8 96 uk model
How do i get pictures up here?

this happened to me it took 2 weeks to find the fault it turned out to be a simple wiring problem i just kept checking everything was insulated eventualy found 2 wires wich where not shorting out but for some reason if these wires are not insulated the engine cuts out after about 2 seconds i can peel the tape of now and it cuts out very odd i will try to post pics of where my wires are allthough you cant realy tell which part of the loom they come from .

If you could get some pictures that would be good. My particular problem is down to half the factory immobilizer being missing which is causing me all sorts of problems. Good to known about other possible causes though
Cheers

I had the same issue with mine, ran perfect for 2 seconds then stalled... turned out to be factory immobilizer. Originally located in the dash board up near the screen from memory? Fairly sure it is a small black box, i will check for you tomorrow.

Hi mattnj
What did you do about your immobilizer in the end?
I have bought a second hand ecu and immobilizer set but there were no keys, i have got the key code for the new immobilizer but i still have my ignition barrel. is it possible to get i locksmith to cut and code a new set of keys???
