Would anyone be interested in one of these? I can get them custom made so can be machined without the power steering/aircon part for those not running either, but still dragging the extra weight from the pulley around I have a spare one, and I've passed it onto my engineer for him to look into the costs, but would like to know if it's a goer before he spends too much time on it.

Tim, Like that yes, but better and cheaper We can make them so they don't have the second ribbed section for the power steering/aircon as the Exocet doesn't use it (unless you've built the car with P/S, then we can do one with the second ribbed section) Like I said last week at the meet, we can produce most things that can be machined from billet in either ally or s/s

I've just shipped the pulley to my engineer, so he'll have a look over it this weekend and give me an idea for 1x 5x etc I'm assuming the pulleys for the mk1 and 2 are the same? It's just the top end that's got the VVT yes?

I think there is a short nose & long nose crankshaft, therefore the pulley could have a variety of part numbers....check

From what I can see, the other crank was only on the very early 1.6 engines

Long time Miata owner (and complete Exocet newb) here.
The MX5s have used several different pulleys over the years.
The '90 - '91.5 engines were fitted with the infamous "short-nose" crankshaft, and had their own pulley. These cars had VINs lower than 209447.
On the US-spec cars, the pulley changed again in '94, when they switched from a V-belt to a flat belt for the water pump and alternator drive, and I assume the Euro-spec cars changed at around the same time. The pulley changed again in '99, when they changed the body style.
I would strongly counsel against installing any kind of lightweight or undersized crank pulley on any MX5, however. Beyond its obvious function, the stock pulley is also a harmonic damper- if you look closely at one, you will note that it is actually two pieces separated by a rubber cushion.
MX5s are notorious for suffering damage to the oil pump gears, which are made from sintered steel. You see this happen quite a bit on extremely high-HP turbocharged engines, those turned at very high RPM, and those fitted with cheap, lightweight pulleys.

It's an interesting discussion, and I've come across it several times in the past regarding pulleys with harmonic dampers. These are very often made of rubber, which as you know over time will perish or become hard, thus not providing any dampening. I have also seen people have issues with the crank with standard pulleys fitted due to this, but again, only on high horsepower/high revving engines.
The pulleys we make thankfully aren't cheap, and are balanced, so shouldn't suffer from these issues, but it's the same with any performance modification, the buyer should be aware of any potential issues fitting the part in question may suffer before they fit, whether it be a lightened pulley, lightened flywheel, performance cams, air filter... 99% of modifications designed to improve the performance have a negative attached to them.
