Hi im planning on building an exocet and am at the slow point of selling all the parts off my 2 mx5 donors but have a few questions. The standard lighting kit that you can buy extra to the kit is ok but wondering if anyone has used anything different. I have seen these ones on ebay cgi.ebay.co.uk/RDX-LED-Rear-Light-lamps-Carbon-Pods-Kit-Car-Caterham-/230627506766?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35b2787a4ethey are a sidelight, brake light and indicator all in one unit, also comes with the reverse light and fog light and pods to fit them. My question is are these ok for iva purposes, they say they are e marked and quote "Single Pods are angled for SVA compliance", just wondering on your opinions of them. Also i have a 1.6 116bhp mx5 and a 1.8 130bhp one, but i am wondering which engine to use for performace. I plan on having the engine standard but would ideally like to supercharge it at some point. The 1.6 engine is only 15bhp less but weights less and is more revvy, where as the 1.8 has more low end torque but weights more. Just wondering what peoples choices are when they are building theres.

Hi H5ngs,
Number of thoughts.....
I was also wanting to go down the LED route, but decided to wait until after I get through the SVA. The only problem that I can envisage is ensuring that they come out far enough once mounted to the back of the car as the SVA test is very specific around lighting measurements.
Personally, I decided to go for a 1.8. I haven't looked in to either power:weight ratio or general performance comparisons, but figured that it was best to get the larger brakes etc... of the 1.8 - I guess that you can still use 1.8 brakes even if you put a 1.6 in to her?
Cheers,
Steve.

ive gone with the shortnose cranked 1600, and its not lightning fast, but seems to rev very freely and is amazing fun. In honesty, i went for it as it was an import, had the higher bhp and comes with an LSD, so fit the bill well. As for the lights, you need to make sure theyre mounted correctly in terms of position, think it was something like maximum of 400 from the edge of the car (furthest edge of wing) and minimum of 350 off the ground, there also needs to be a certain amount of space between the fog and brake lights. The lights surface must also be perfectly horizontal, or it'll fail! see pic for an idea of where these measurements end up! the yellow represents the area (ish) which meets all the requirements for brake and indicator. with the 32mm spacers and 205 tyres on mine the 400mm requirement from the edge doesnt even contact the back GRP at all, hench the Heath Robinson lighting set up! the ebay ones you show look as though they need to be mounted flat on something...

Alex has it spot on, you must achieve the minimum distances in the IVA manual or you will fail.I think the lighting set available from our Master is perhaps one of the weaker parts of the kit and I`m sure either Stiggy or a supplier will come up with a neater solution, the kit is crying out for it. regards Ted.

Yeah thanks for the reply's, like i said i have both cars so have the all the advantages from the 1.8 like bigger brakes, torsen type 1 LSD, the rear subframe have the brace bars on which they added at a later date, can also use the 1.8 flywheel and clutch set-up on the 1.6 engine, i just liked the way my 1.6 drove compared to a friends 1.8 which didnt seem to be any quicker just a bit duller to drive. Hummm got plenty of time to decide which engine to go for but will research a little more. As for the lights i like the front lo/hi mains just the rest of them, i understand the kit car designed to be a simple cheap kit to build and for the i cannot fault it, as with all kits people are going to have opinions of what they like or dont like and as its a kit car thats the whole point, you can make no 2 cars the same its all down to the builder, thanks for the advice with iva requirements maybe think about extending the rear body to take flat lights but then totally change the shape of the rear end. Ill have a think about it tho.
One quick note, ive posted but no reply, does anyone know anything about the mx150r ive seen on youtube, the one with the aeroducts on the sides and full cage. I think the cage route is what i will opt for when building and i like academy motorsports build cage more than the mx150r designed one. Anyone have an idea of cost of a cage like that? i was thinking its going to be £400+ just wondered if stiggy has decided to make it an option yet?
Cheers Craig.
