I am on with the teardown of my donor car again and being very methodical with the wiring. Labeling everything and cutting nothing. I want to plug everything back in when the engine is out of the car and then work on stripping away the stuff I don't need. I have also been thinking about the gear selector. Obviously I will need to reverse the gear selector for the gears to work, and I am sure I read somewhere that the gear selector from a Mazda MX5 or a MR2 would work as their engine are rear mounted and the selector patterm is the same. Does anyone have any idea how I can check the gear selector pattern other than buying a selector and trying it?

if you take a front transverse engine/box and put it in the rear then the shifter needs to be the reverse of what you have, if your push pull cable balljoint is above the gear lever pivot then you need one that is below. The alternative is to turn the engine 180 degs, your shifter will be correct and you get a choice or reverse ratios! I recall that the Focus (IB5 box) lever was the opposite to Mondaneo, i.e Focus cable attached above the lever pivot and Mondeo (MTX75) below.

Yes this is exactly what I was trying to say thanks Stuart. So I am looking for a gear selector that is used on a rear engined car, just not sure which to use. Any ideas? I am sure the Ariel atom & nomad use the same engine and gearbox, but I can't find the gear selector that they use.

I didn't say look for a gear selector of a rear engine car?

I understand about moving the connecting cables to above the pivot point (they are currently below) to reverse the pattern but it's no as easy as it sounds. I thought purchasing a selector from a rear engine car would already have this arrangement so be much easier, I'm just not sure which selector would have the correct pattern. Am I over thinking this? do gearboxes all have different shift patterns or are they all (mostly) the same?

Am I over thinking this? do gearboxes all have different shift patterns or are they all (mostly) the same? the issue depends on how the gear selector is configured, not what orientation in a given car. For example a Focus with an IB5 box has the lever you require but a Focus with the Getrag (ST170)would be incorrect for you.

Is there any way I can check which would work? is there a record of which gearboxes uses which pattern? Or is there a simple way when looking at a selector to know which would work (without actually fitting it to the gearbox).

I have continued with the strip down of the Accord Type S donor this past weekend. It's taking so much longer than when I did the Honda Accord Type R for my Rocket, but I am sure time spent now will save me many hours on the build as I am being carefull not to cut any wires, labelling everything and making notes as I go. I am constantly impressed with Honda's build quality, and how they have improved this engine (K24) over the H22 engine which I used in my last build. I have been looking into software today as I intend to design the chassis in CAD software, this should make it easier for me to visualise everything and to make changes before the build begins. I have been looking into Solidworks and Autodesk 3DS Max but the high price and steep learning curve put me off. I have decided to try 'Blender' which looks great. There are already some models of Ariel Nomad ( see link) that people have spent many hours rendering so I may purchase those renderings ($75) and make changes rather than starting from scratch. The bonus here is that the wheels, seats, steering wheel etc are standard size and I am using the same engine so all of that is done for me. Does anyone have any experience with Blender? I have a few long flights coming up (honeymoon) over Christmass and New Year and will be spending over 40 hours in the air so I will take my laptop and use that time to design my car. Hopefully I should have something decent by the time I get back home in 2020.

Erm you are taking your laptop to design a car whilst on your honeymoon - I sense trouble coming up

So here is my engine and gearbox. As you can see they are a mess, look dirty and the aluminium block and gearbox casing is corroded. I am looking for the best way to clean them at home as I don't want to have them bead blasted. This is mine I want it to look like this I am thinking some kind of acid? any suggestions?
