Hello,
I just purchased my donor 90 Miata and started the teardown. I was wondering if anyone has some insight on what things to look out for to register the exocet for street driving in AZ? I haven't purchased the kit yet so is there any extra bits I should buy with the order?
Thanks in advance, Kevin

Registering a 'special construction' vehicle in AZ couldn't be any easier, at least out here in the NW - might be different in the metropolitan areas. Where in AZ are you? A glass windshield with wiper is required, I build the cars with one seat and have a single screen with a manual wiper for inspection. You aren't required to have fenders although they are a good idea, a lot of rocks get thrown into the car from open wheels. The local inspector mainly was interested in checking engine and chassis numbers, he ran the engine number to check that it matched the donor and that was about it.
Pay your $25 and take the receipts to the MVD and get your plates!

Yes, I plan on getting fenders and I was concerned about what wheel fitment I need to get. How did you dispose of the donor unibody? I'm trying to keep all the parts to see if I can sell them. Thanks again

Do you have smog checks in Phoenix? Should be no problem if you leave the emission equipment in place.
My donors never actually made it to AZ, I dismantled them at our daughter's place in CA and the bodys went to scrap yards there, one Miata went to a body shop to repair one that had been rear ended. I just handed in the AZ title when I registered the cars.
It would be a good idea to find out the name of your local vehicle inspector and ask what he would be looking for.

Yes, they do emissions here. I should be fine though. I plan on initially keeping everything as stock as possible. I keep reading people having problems with aligning seats that they bought on their own. I wonder if buying everything from exomotive will avoid some of the extra work and custom fabricating later on?

Hi Kevin. I’m also in the Phoenix area and my Exocet frame should be shipping any day. I’m planning on using a k24 engine. I spoke with the MVD but wasnt planning the engine swap at that time. They made it sound really easy. Wasn’t planning on a windshield wiper. I don’t have any answers yet, but good to see someone else in the area is building an Exocet. gif upload site

Yes, I was wondering if wipers are mandatory also. I was only going to drive it locally and maybe do some track days at Firebird raceway so I should be able to avoid monsoons.

Our local inspector wants to see a wiper - manual is fine, I made one up but you can get a manual wiper from a marine store. direct link upload images

Arcpowdercoating in Glendale. No complaints, it’s nearly perfect. Car was rust free.

Just ordered a couple weeks ago as well. My plan is to use an Ecotec engine, so I'm curious about the engine swap difference when registering. Guess I'll have to make a phone call.
Some searching online says I just need to verify where I got the engine (receipts). So I'll be keeping those. I'll still call ahead.
What does it get registered as? 199X Miata? 1962 Lotus? Obviously I'd love to skip the smog check but does it look enough like a Lotus to pull it off?
Another edit, I guess AZ exempts emissions if you have Collector Car insurance.

Good information on the insurance. Everyday at work I intend on calling MVD to talk to an inspector and I get swamped and never get to calling.
I ordered my exocet this past week with the 6 inch windscreen. I'm hoping that is acceptable here.

That would be good to know. Also we need to know if it needs to be DOT glass or not (ie will polycarb work?). I'm probably going to order the mount and have someone cut the glass for me. That mount sure is pricey though!
I made a thread in the DMV section for AZ. Hopefully it gets filled in by people that have gone through the process.

Our local (Mohave County) inspector says it must be 'safety' glass - local glass company cut a piece for me - no DOT marking but apparently OK.
