Now have my rocket home and whilst it is perfectly fine as it as already considering upgrades! Brakes, has according to the part numbers on the calipers escort calipers, is that standard? If so want to look at changing these out for wilwood or Brembo, had a quick look online and there seems to be a few kits available, does anyone have any thoughts on which ones are the best to go for? And where best to buy? suspension, booked in for a full set up as it's a bit lively, tracking certainly seems to be out, found somewhere local which looks pretty good, will post feedback once I have had this done Power! Has the early focus 1.8 engine in, 115bhp as stock I believe, will a st170 engine drop straight in or will it need new mounts etc? Assume gearbox isn't compatible? Few other minor jobs required, no fog light switch despite a fog light being fitted, crimp in the fuel return line and a small oil leak which looks like it's coming from the dipstick tube, oh and I want to get a new exhaust made as the current one has no silencer and I am pretty sure will fail at MOT List is longer than I thought! Many thanks Paul

We should be able to help out with the brakes. What uprights are you using?

All Rocket regardless of age or who made them have Cortina type uprights apart from the ones that used the Focus rear stub axle bolted to a steel fabricated front upright plate, the Al uprights made in China for Rally design offer the Cortina geometry. Calipers are M16.

Thanks Stuart it's a vehicle you supplied, I have the original bill, although the wilwood kit which was on the order seem to have been removed from the car!

The Gearbox will mate to the ST170 engine, but you'll need to keep the clutch and flywheel from your 1.8, as well as the driveshaft bracket. The MTX75 & gertag boxes that come with the 2.0 (or some ST170s) and ST170 respectively will require mounts adjusting, as well as changing the driveshafts. The Gertag may also need the hubs swapping or custom drive shafts - can't quite remember if the splines match.
The ST170 has a returnless fuel system, so you'll either need to change the pump and electrics to cope or adapt, there is a thread on here somewhere...
The electrics are different as well, to get the most out of the ST170 you need to control the inlet routing and the VVT - stuff your current ECU is unlikely to cope with.

Mawdo, that's great thanks so much, given me plenty to consider

Hi all, quick question re this, have been doing plenty of reading on modifying 1.8 and 2.0 engines, seems the 2.0 is the engine of choice as easier to get more bang for your buck so to speak, am assuming mounts are the same on the 1.8 and 2.0, looking at picking up a 2.0 and educating myself as I go, possibly, new cams, Throttle Bodies, ECU, maybe even turbo charged, but with upgraded cams and TB, I would have thought 170-180bhp wouldn't be out of the question?
At least this way I can still run the car and work on the engine separately (and build the replicar!) while I enjoy the rocket
Cheers

Fast road cams, some hayabusa TB's and get the head ported and you could be looking around the 200 bhp mark with a good ecu.

THere's a 90K ST170 donor car on a FB group for a couple of hundred, or about £900 would get you a new crate 2.0

Morning Mawdo, thinking 2.0 as should slide in with little modification, gearbox etc can stay, I looked at the crate motors very good value but as I am going to be stripping it down completely seemed a bit of a waste to take apart a completely fine new engine, have not done serious engine work before so am quite looking forward to taking it apart and working through the various stages, although if I can achieve 200bhp with porting, tb and cams don’t see (and this may change!) any reason to go forced induction, if I did go beyond 200bhp would assume I am getting into the realms of forged pistons etc
Thanks mate

I am planning the following - Extensively ported head. New cams. New inlet manifold, possibly not ITB'S as I've been told about a different approach using an ST170 inlet to take advantage of dual runner length. However if I do use ITB'S then looking at shaftless units. Removal of as much parasitic drag as possible, already have an electric water pump so that leaves underdressed pulleys etc. Side gapped and indexed spark plugs. Now before anyone chips in about how ridiculously expensive this will be and forced induction will be half the cost for twice the power I can only say "Yes I know"
