This depends on the law in your state/country. Probably the most important thing is to find and read the state law regarding the registration of kit vehicles.
In Massachusetts, you need to:
From the donor:
1. keep everything emissions related (all oxygen sensors, charcoal canister, _new_ catalytic converter, original/factory electronics),
2. document that the vehicle is scrapped:
* photographic evidence of each part that has VIN being delivered to scrapyard: parts with the VIN number stamp or sticker cannot be sold and it is a felony in MA to remove the VIN from an auto part.
* receipt from scrapyard with VIN showing title transfer to them (they need the original title);
3. keep the dash pod even if you are not going to use it as you might need it for "original mileage",
For when the car is done and you are ready to register:
4. For the Exocet frame: ensure you have an invoice which lists all the major components you purchased from Exomotive which includes the original date of purchase and which shows any sales tax (if any) paid. I got in trouble in MA for not paying sales tax in the year I bought my frame. This cost me > $500.00 in fees/penalties. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you pay sales tax on your frame the year you purchase it if your state taxes auto parts.
5. Keep every receipt; even for a can of paint or oil. Depending on the inspection process you may need to be able to produce it. I didn't have to show my stack of receipts but I've heard this is completely up to the inspector and some are sticklers.
I found that requirements will vary from state to state or even from one inspector/RMV/DMV worker to another.
