Hi all,
Need some help please. First attempt!
Just positioned the chassis on the PPF and remembered that somebody said about the critical height from ground level to the rear lights is too short, if using OE wheels and types. They said that it needed packing under chassis to correct.
Is this true and what 'packers' should I see?
Cheers,
Big K

Cheers, Big K Assume you are talking Replicar as its not a problem for Exocet, I dont think problem is as pronounced on latest body (one with doors and boot) and seems to be worse where folk have gone aftermarket adjustable shocks (as I think these are fitted on MX5s to lower the car). Were I starting again Id stick with standard springs and shocks (until after IVA). Another way of raising car is to fit higher profile wheels and tyres but this means standard dash speedo will be inaccurate however one of builders has come across bit of tech to adjust speedo feed so shouldn't be a problem Other option with taller wheels tyres is of course aftermarket speedo. Finally you can use spacer to lift chassis over rear subframe but this leads to its own problems not only in way load is transferred through bolts but also how floor edges fit to body (if lift is too high you will have to pull body side in more to meet floor ~ hope this makes sense). Id go with as few washers as you can get away with to clear subframe (you'll see what I mean when you fit) and go with higher profile tyres, standard dash and piece of tech or aftermarket speedo.

Thanks for the reply. Car is a Replicar on an MX5. MK2. 1999. Pics show the rear chassis over the subframe.

Thanks for your reply; detail is excellent.
Yes, I think you're right and the problem is not really there. I have seen problems on the blog which I haven't ran into on the latest frame. May have been designed out.
Thanks,
K.

I'd honestly wait until you have the full chassis assembled with suspension and then trial fit body. As mentioned off the shelf aftermarket coilovers can make this height issue a bigger problem, I have just ordered Protech Coilovers to avoid this issue. If using standard MX5 shocks and spring don't think you would have any issue. By the way I noticed that in Stuart's build blog he has the rear outrigger sandwiched between the subframe and chassis. I originally had the outrigger bolted on top and packed the space between subframe and chassis with some washers to avoid contact at shock mount area, but by changing to the sandwich set-up I don't need any washers.

You will need a couple of washers between the chassis and the rear subframe. This will not effect the lights height. If you pack them further apart it only serves to raise the chassis and the top of the shocks so the ground clearance remains the same. Depending on wheel/tyre size and shocks/springs you may need to pack the sus tops to gain IVA light height compliance. My IVA tests have all been fine but if you have larger wheels the speedo may be out. I just pull off the needle and stick it back on reading 10mph at standstill. They don't test speed below 20.

For completeness in respect of previous threads where others have talked about spacers between chassis and subframe they have also suggested a spacer between shock and chassis to address Stuarts point. I wouldn't recommend this route though.
