94 Miata Donor (US) I'm at the stage where I'm starting to wire my car. I've laid the harness out and have it in the car. I have the battery connected and the only circuit I've found that works so far is the headlight circuit. So, it's clear I have some work to do. I'm going to start pouring over the wiring diagrams and just go one circuit at a time until I trace them all.
Headlights are a go, so next is parking, brake lights, turn signals, etc.
But, I have a couple of question. on the Driver's side (left), there is a connector just inside of the passenger compartment from the bulkhead grommet. For some reason I didn't label that one. I'm guessing that I didn't label it because it wasn't connected to anything, but I'm wondering what that is for.
Also, all of the wiring diagrams I have (Haynes manual) include the DRL module, but I don't think I have that since it's a US, not Canadian car. Any ideas on how I reconcile that? (it might become clear once I start digging in and tracing circuits).
thanks

Firstly I wouldn't connect the battery when you are wiring. Wait until you are sure everything is hooked up right. That's a good way to fry something. Secondly until you have all your grounds hooked up most things will not work. There is grounds on the engine, engine to frame, in the trunk, dash, and drivers side. Make sure they are all hooked up. These cars were made in Japan, I believe they all have DRL. The educated world has required them for quite some time...

I don't see NA miata's running around with the running lamps on, but maybe so...
I do have most of the grounds connected, I found one near the instrument panel that was just a bare wire, but it's a ground. I'll hook that up before further testing. I have been disconnecting the battery when connecting ECU, etc.
trunk, dash, passenger side grounds are connected. didn't connected engine braided line, will have to do that. I can't find anymore ground connections on the harness.

You will likely be able to find the wiring diagram in the link below. Hope this helps. Link <--------------------Drawings

one more question... on the engine ground to the firewall, where does that connect to the engine? the one on my donor has the eye broken on the engine side.

one more question... on the engine ground to the firewall, where does that connect to the engine? the one on my donor has the eye broken on the engine side. Right on the side of the head next to the oil dipstick. Also, Without the main engine ground connected, the engine would not be likely to crank over.

I moved mine to the passenger side of the engine on the bolt that is used for the hoist bracket. Since I wasn't going to leave the bracket on mise well use it for something.

Is the connector in question long with about places for @ 18 wires.. if so that was for the cruise control module. When asking questions about connectors a pic is good and color of wires and location.. There should be about 10 ground spots.. 6 front harness, 2 dash, 2 rear. Check this for wiring in color.. print off and put in plastic page sleeves.. Stays clean and can use grease pencil on it. www.mellens.net/mazda/Mazda-Miata-1994/wiring.pdf USA NA cars did not come DRL you had to add the DRL module if you wanted them..

Cruise control module makes sense and I have one other unused plug right near where the teal airbag module plugs in. Based on wire colors, it's where the DRL module would plug in, if I had one. Should that just be empty? There isn't a jumper that plugs into it.
My Donor was running before I disassembled it 18 months ago... (just an FYI)
Ok, I've been hitting my head against a wall... based on the wiring diagram, There is a white/red wire from the main fuse block on the right side of the engine compartment. I only see one white/red wire coming out of it, and it doesn't have power. I have power on both sides of the main fuse. I have power going into the BTN fuse and the fuse is good. The only wires with 12v out of the main fuse block are: - Brown (same connector as the white/red wire) - head light retractors - Red/Blue - headlights - Blue/yellow (part of A/C system?)
I checked the interior fuse block and there are no connections with power, even though some should be full-time hot.
I also checked all of the block connectors and the wire colors match up, so I don't have any of them connected wrong. The two connectors for the instrument panel have to be correct, because there is a two-wire connector close to the left connector, so it has to be correct.
Since I'm basically dead (other than headlight circuits), I'm thinking it must be something fundamental.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You say you have power going into the BTN fuse do you have 12V going through/out to the W/R wire. Have you checked with meter or test lamp not just look at fuse.. Do you have meter or test lamp.. if not take one of the light sockets and bulb with wire from a side marker You now have a lamp touch wires to battery post to make sure it lights.

I'm using a meter. I have 12 volt coming in to the BTN fuse, I tested continuity on the fuse and it's good. The white/red wire doesn't have 12 volts. The brown wire right next to it does. based on your response, I should have 12V there. (key not on, just battery plugged in)

If you have 12 in there should be 12 out.. did you remove fuse to check it.. Dirty connector for fuse legs.. Did you check on the underside of the box power in/out.

I'm going to pop the box apart and starting tracking internally. I'm going to a Pro-solo this weekend, so I'm not going to make much progress until next week...
I was expecting that box to be pretty simple on the inside, basically acting as a bus to get 12v spread various places, but it seems more complicated than that considering how few wires have 12V

There's two W/R wires that come out of there. One is switched one isn't. Make sure you have the the right W/R wire....I made that mistake.

I figured it out.... I took the fuse block apart to see if I could figure out why the red/white wire didn't have power. It turns out that along with the pretty standard looking connectors, there is an oddball connecter that I guess I assumed was part of the airbag system based on it's coloration. When I opened up the fuseblock, I realized there there were exposed tabs on the back side of the BTN fuse that didn't go anywhere.... so... found the plug that matched up, which included a white/red wire and voila, parking lights, dash lights, when I turn the key to run, all of the idiot lights turn on, etc. So... now I need to go and verify each circuit and make sure I have power everywhere and then maybe try and start it.
Thanks for the help...
the other thing I realized. The switched white/red wire that I was thinking was the wire I needed to worry about was a smaller guage than the unswitched white/red.
