Well I called in ALL my Brownie points this weekend and had a double hill climb weekend.
Saturday saw us doing a 1.8km climb which went without drama or incident. Below is my best run.
There was discussion before this run as to whether to use minimum gear changes and just drive it or to try and select the "best gear". The conscientious seemed to be minimum gear changes so I concentrated on trying to drive a better line rather than drive in the best gear.
The result of this was a reduction of 1.5 seconds over my previous best run
Sunday saw us on a different hill and a longer course 2.8km and it was incident packed for sure.
At the 25 second mark you can see the marshal on the right who seemed to be collecting drivers with mechanical problems, fuel pump, gear box and lost power steering pulleys to name just three.
At 33 seconds we enter the gravel section, quite short, but caught a few out - this was a tarmac event!
Around the 45 second mark you see, well don't see, the car that went over the bank and was only stopped from plunging another 100m down the side of the hill by the wire fence that luckily held him back - still at least he was well off the racing line
Then at 1:22 we have the back end of the winning car, again placed carefully on the side of the road so as not to be an obstruction to the following drivers. He did leave a trail of oil though due to the front end damage sustained in the same incident.
The final corner at 2:19 did not give any grief this year but apparently last year this innocuous little bend collected two WRX's both of which had driven from Wellington but had to go back on trucks.
This run was my fastest of the day knocking over six seconds off the run before.
I still have so much to learn in this game but I am having fun getting there. Whilst still at the back of the field I feel that I am improving and becoming a threat, at least to those put in the same class as me. I have to drive the corners harder for sure although that is easier said than done when you look over the edge and all you can see is the bottom a long way off!
Oddly enough though going down is worse than coming up, mainly because you tend to look over the edge and see those things, coming up you only concentrate on the road ahead.
