Driving down from Caen avoid the toll roads and you are in for some cracking scenery, tree lined routes, little cafes at junctions serving great food, just be careful in a RHD even with a good navigator things can get interesting.
Taking this route avoids all the speed merchants desperate to be given a ticket by the gendarmes who love the 'fast' toll routes where they can issue loads. Its also perfect for tootling along top down (only caught by rain once since 2000) but be careful not to get forehead sunburn (anyone who has driven a drop top in the sun abroad will know what i mean).
Its even better if you're in a classic or a kit (and not driving like a knxb) as the locals outside the cafes are very welcoming and always want to know about the car.

Paid balance few weeks ago and have booked a different camp site this time, used to use Porsche curves area but now gone inside closer to the tram.
We go into le man a few times for a beer/food and it used to be a 45min walk, now much closer.
Two cars for the journey Aston martin vantage v8 and golf r , neither of which are mine just co pilot.

I miss it more every time, I really must get my car done by 2018.
Did you do the back roads to/from Le Mans?

Unfortunately not. We were in a group with an Merc SL320, Lotus Elan and an MGBGT in my mates Elise (2000 S2). The others had all been before and we were the newbies so didn't feel like we could dictate. It was a good group but to be there with but the journey would have been more fun on our own. Paul & I agreed that we would have been better off in his 3 series or my Mazda 6 for speed/comfort/economy given the road choices. Next time I hope we'll take my Sonic and his Elan and split off for the journey.
It's a shame it's during term time as his son and my little girl would love it. Abi has only taken her T-shirt off to go to school!

Anyone pick up a ticket from the over zealous gendarmes?

Not in our group, we were around speed limit most of the time due to the MGBGT...It didn't particularly like French fuel! We didn't see that many tbh and had all the bulbs, hi vis etc they want you to have.

Surprised as they do like pulling over Lotii..............and be warned their favourites are BMW M3s
Anything classic is safe even at speed.

Agree great trip, we used back roads and it added about 1 hour onto the trip but was worth it the roads cutting through France with just a few small villages every 10 miles or so. We found somewhere with high octane fuel thankfully.
It was hot though , very hot.
Problem cowing home though with the Monday afternoon ferry delayed about 90 minutes so when we landed at Portsmouth had a 4.5 hour drive back to Manchester I got home at 4am.
My mate got hit on the m6 by a blown tyre from lorry in front caused some damage to his golf r but thankfully lorry driver stopped and exchanged details etc so insurance will fix. Took out his front bumper and radiator maybe more.
Did anyone see the Aston replicar with the Aston owners club ? Company called ASM I think.
