On the issue of depowering the steering rack, something I definitely want to do with all the pipes etc! But as I not overly concerned re performance (car will only be road use) what's the general feeling on just looping the pipe, have read the guides not keen on stripping everything down and welding so unless the half way house solution is not something people would recommend I wouldn't be doing a full strip down, just remove belt, pump and the pipes etc thanks, Paul whats the welding you refer to? My mk2 rack didn't need any welding just removal of the piston within the rack, and removal of the pipework before a good amount of grease inserted within the quill shaft housing.

I just filled my old fittings with molymetal and painted them (three visible in photo) Reason I didn't go with short circuit pipe is you're still moving fluid around system, albeit not under pressure.

Quick question and probably an obvious one! The top ball joint rubber to remove on the mk2 seems like a pain, found a guide which suggests just running a knife round to cut off so presumably it's fixed somehow and doesn't have a band holding it on?

Top ball joint rubber has a metal ring within the rubber holding it in place, fairly easy to remove, be careful not to damage the lip of the housing. New ones fitted, once plenty of grease in place around ball, by soaking for a few minutes in a mug of boiling water from a kettle! Being heated like this, and with plenty of grease around housing they slipped on fairly easily using a socket with outer edge that EXACTLY (didn't want to pinch rubber)matched circumference of the metal ring within rubber boot.

Sorting out collection of the body but scrap merchant says I need to provide v5 and confirm vehicle is scrapped, is that not going to cause an issue when I come to the iva and reregistering? Thanks Paul
And I hope everyone had a great Christmas and my best wishes for 2016!

I didn't give the scrappy anything apart from the body. You're not scrapping it, just getting rid of the body.

Cut out all identifying marks (vin etc) that satisfied my scrappy.

You may need to find another scrappy or cut it up yourself the vin on the doner bulkhead must be cut out and retained by you along with log book as you send that to dvla at end of your build when you register it I still have my vin from my doner hanging in my shed as a trophy

I did cut my plate out but I don't think you need it for anything, the last car I IVA'd they didn't want to see it.

Cutting it out satisfies the scrappy that their not illegally crushing a vehicle without informing the Dvla with a v5. It's not needed for anything else as far as I'm aware.
