The sonic is noticeably wider if you do get to view them next to each other - basically there's an extra 100mm front and rear. The purpose is simply to add to the aesthetics of the Sonic compared to the Rocket; it is a much more beautiful machine of course . Martin

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder fo sure!
I'd be in trouble at that width though, I already have to fit spacesavers to the front of my Rocket to get it on the trailer.

You're absolutely right about the width being an issue for trailers - it only just fitted on the one I hired for its first trip for IVA. Literally only a couple of mm either side! It also means you have to be slightly more "thoughtful" on narrow roads.....oncoming traffic only see a small car oncoming; they sometimes don't give you room enough. And just to clarify.....I do think Rockets look fantastic too......especially red ones of course Martin

re: trailer. Yep finding a trailer to take the track width meant I had to get a "wheels under" trailer instead of a cheaper "wheels at side" trailer.
I think that the track width is in part to accommodate the body width at the rear , only the original designer would know the true answer to that. It also makes the car look lower
RE wheel offset. I have the impression that the typical ford offset referred to in forums is ET40. The donor wheels on the 1.8 ford focus were 15x6j ET46. These donor wheels did fit the sonic but we took care to make sure the cycle wing stays were installed to suit. Not all cycle wing stays made over the years work with 15 inch ET 45plus wheels.
I take ET40 to be a general guide for some fords but I think it also has to be considered in relation to width of the wheel. ( e.g. 6J or 7J or 8J or...Carlos Fandango sizes )
When you assemble your wing stays onto the uprights , try to make allowances for a range of wheel sizes. If you want a second pair of wheels later on for track tyres you probably want to change down to small diameter wheels that might also be a wider J size.

My original Momo et35 with 195 tyres just fitted nicely on my trailer with 20mm either side, when I changed to et28 and 205 tyres there was no way it was going on as there are two rails either side. Well I say never, I might have got it on with enough run up speed but it was then never coming off, still wouldn't need tie downs I suppose The back fits nicely though even with the wider combination. As for Carlos had to look him up

Ok, so recently I managed to get my project rolling which is a great help as I can now relocate it out of the marquee to a workshop that I'm going to rent to save the woes of the winter. Having put all four wheels on, I can't help but notice that the distance between the two front wheels is greater than the distance between the two rear wheels. Is this normal? I am aware that my rear wheels need spacing to bring them away from the wishbones - the clearance is much too close, and possibly even touching when suspension is in full droop. I acquired 4 24mm wheel spacers to solve the clearance issue, but I purchased these before I realised that there was a width discrepancy between the two front wheels and the two back wheels. Is it going to be necessary to space the front wheels with narrower spacers to make the front and the back match up? I'm presuming yes!

My sonic is wider at the front too, measuring 1700m/m overall the fixing face of the wheel. Whereas 1642m/m overall the 50m/m hubcentric wheel spacers at the rear,
I probably have the answers too
I am sorry but I cant get used to this forum - it really is hard work - I cant send messages either, which sux !!
