Steering rack was next up, again no real challenges mounting this, after measuring twice and drilling once it sat in place as expected. However, it did have to come off again I had the quick rack steering to install. I need to now get these bits below, inside the rack.

All done, old parts out, new parts in, not sure how much difference this will make to the steering once I'm mobile but I thought in principle it sounded like a useful modification So here are the bits that came out and its ready to fit back onto the car.

Time to mock up the hub assembly. All looks to be going together well but the top hats that sit on the lower ball joint were not a great fit. Soon sorted through by RTR and Paul posted me out a new set with a smaller internal diameter to fit snug on the ball joint. Again can’t take this any further as I don’t have the hub or callipers that are on back order from RTR.

Look what’s arrived today, I think with all the bits that keep arriving the wife is starting to question the build budget I gave her.

Decided to move onto Pedal box, have the usual willwood pedal box to fit. Again after offering this up it was clear that it wouldn’t fit if bolted directly onto the Chassis. Whilst the pedals would have clearance the brake cylinders would not. Initially I was going to use a couple more 5mm spacers to fill the gap but decided to go with nuts instead. A nut on the underside if the chassis plate gives just enough clearance to ensure the Cylinders fit perfectly. All bolted in place but will need some work later to set the front and rear balance.

I initially assumed that if I ordered the accelerator pedal from RTR it would be a good fit and should work well with the Willwood pedal box they supplied. This was a wrong assumption. The pedal is not what I would have expected and looks really naff when put alongside the others. A bit of a disappointment. So I have done as most others have and made contact with The Joker. A new Pedal has now been ordered and I should have this by the end of the week.

On to the steering column extension. After a recommendation from Deano I hit the CBS website and managed to get a useful UV joint that would fit onto the splines on the new steering rack. Then looked at how best to extend the reach. Again CBS were able to supply an extension rod that would work for me. After a bit of jiggery pokery, a trip to a local welder, and bracket put in place to hold the rose joint I now have this sorted and in place. Just hope the angle is right for IVA

Help! I have hit a little bit of a snag now. Ive been waiting for some parts to come from RTR which have just arrived. Front Hubs, High Spec Calipers etc. But looking at the hub and the brake disc they don’t seem to align. I disagreeumption was that the disc would bolt on the the square plate at the rear of the hub (this seems to be the case in others build diaries) but the holes in the disc don’t align at all. They are spaced to fit the front part of the hub that the wheel bolts on. The holes in the hub are spaced 65mm and the holes in the Disc are spaced at 85mm. Am I missing something here or do I have the wrong discs for the hubs?

You measure the holes in the disc/hub diagonally. If the discs you have fit onto the front of the hub then they are 4x108mm, this is the fitment required for the MK1 focus cars. You can't fit these on to the hub but you should be able to fit them on to the rear hubs ok as most use ST170 discs on the back. The back of the hub has a 4x92 fitment, the discs you need are from a Ford Cortina/Escort, rally design sell loads of them but the cross drilled ones similar to the ones you have are these :- www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=15380Just give them a call and they will sort you out, just tell them you have the alloy upright kit. I'm sure these are the discs I have on mine at the moment.

Wasn't planning on putting a floor in the front of the car but this week changed my mind.
Have cut and riveted one in now but have left a 3inch slot at the back to aid air flow and cooling.
Hope I don't end up regretting it
Next stop the radiator.
Watch this space

Having the front end floor rivited in will make it more difficult fitting things especially the radiator and coolant hoses as there isn't really a lot of room in there once you start craming it all in.
Having access from underneath makes it a lot easier.
