A bit of an unusual ask, but im after some of you guys helping me out. Im debating on putting a car tire on my BMW R1200RT, it has a 5.5" rim not a 6 like your 1000cc rear ends, but im after pics of how they seat, how much side wall they create if any and just any more info.
Reason.. Well whilst you read that and thing im an idiot, it is a common thing in the US with big long straight roads. The bike is a sole commuter tool covering 600 miles per weekend. a bike tire will get 3-4k miles, a car tire 20k, contact patch on a bike tire is credit card size, car tire x4.
I recon i could get a semi sporty car tire which will still remove more water than bike rubber would. and all for less that £100
So.. any pics from directly behind showing profile, and from the side showing seat and side wall depth etc would be great. if you could include tire size and rating too.
Thanks, Paul

I reckon that's a disaster in the making. We don't generally have long smooth straight roads in the UK for that type of tire on a bike. The only people putting car tires on bikes are, us Tr1kers for obvious reasons, and that of people riding bikes with sidecars.... You are gonna come unstuck trying to corner with a car back tire, if you propose to lean into a corner as you would on a bike.

A bike tire will give far more grip in corners, you won't even get around a corner if you fit a car tire.
Its a bad bad idea, in my opinion.
I am more than happy to upload pics if you really want em.
Surely you are finished on your kit car and this is your next project ;D

nah, its an experiment im happy to try nick, believe me I have thought about the pros and cons, the rubber has a big flat spot on it anyway after a thousand miles so im not too concerned. the fastest I go is 80mph, no massive lean angles mate. its gonna happen, I just wanna do more research on what tire. this bike is saving 3 hours on a Friday and 2 on a sunday, so is helping me build the car. ive not been on it now for about 6 weeks due to work. ive just managed to get out of going to Kenya from sept - dec. thank god

Paul there's plenty of pic's on the show us your tR1kes thread showing how the tyre sits on the rim.
The tyres we use are 205/40/17 or 195/40/17
The sidewalls on car tyres are much stiffer than the bike tyres so I don't reckon trying one one your 5.5in rim will create even the slightest curve. On the tR1ke the 205/40 sits dead flat with no curve at all so would be a right pig to turn or change direction.
If you fit one can you post a short clip of you wrestling with it please.

I had a mate years ago had the same Idea, he used to use his bike (ZZR600) to travel from Plymouth to Glasgow most weekends, hardcore or what..
Anyway it was costing him a fortune on tyres, his main stumbling block was his insurance. He couldn't find anyone that would insure his bike with a car tyre on the back so he never took it any further.
I know the trike is slightly different as far as this is concerned but I would look into the insurance side of things before you splash the cash on the tyres.
