Haha yeah it is a bit tight :-) I managed to start work on the car tonight, only had 3 hours but got a fair amount removed from the car. Was great to be playing with some tools again for change. I did find something I was a bit unsure of tucked underneath the centre console. I'm guessing it's something to do with the alarm / imobilizer but hope some one can advise. apart from that all went to plan :-)

Don,
Was thinking back to our early days and a useful tool list.
Apart from the obvious (decent socket set, screw drivers, penetrating oil and big hammer).
A good breaker bar Trolley jack Disc grinder A range of G clamps
Have all been invaluable. Later in the build a Rivnut tool (I brought the MemFast one) Cleco pliers and fasteners are worth there weight in gold.

I do have a good range of tools that I have built up over the years of working as a service engineer. I now work in an office so it was good to get my hands dirty again.
Although I don't have a rivnut tool or cleco pliers so will add them to the shopping list along with blue roll, gloves and a kettle.

I would only use 6 point sockets on any rusty bolts/nuts on the underside to keep from rounding off.. 4foot of pipe to lengthen the breaker bar.. Loosen the rear axle center nuts while you still have brakes. Also front hub/axle nuts.. Drain gas left bottom of tank..

In regards to the hub nuts, I used an Ingersoll Rand W7150 cordless impact and had both rear nuts off in less than 15 seconds. I'm quite happy with my investment in that kit.

I though it would be to do with the alarm,
No progress on the car this weekend but I did get a bench sorted for the workshop and today we went to the Autosport Show at the NEC and put the deposit down on the Exocet :-)

I seen a white one that was a race spec one. I will still take you up on coming to see your work in progress if that's ok. I went for the black option so I can collect next week if I want. I just need to decide on the rear fender type first.

Yeah no problem coming down to have a look at mine… when you say black option is that the panels or the chassis that is already powder coated or both?

Just the panels, I will get the chassis powder coated locally once I have finished drilling holes in it and cleaned up any weld splatter that I have read about. Is powder coat the best option? Stuart today said he would use 2 pack paint on the chassis ?

I looked into painting the Chassis. Its a difficult job because of the tubular design. Lots of nooks and crannies to get a even coat of paint on. The tubes are a nightmare for runs. Power is electrostatically drawn to the frame, so getting an even coverage is straightforward from what I have read. I believe Welshy painted his chassis, maybe worth contacting him for advice.

I bought my chassis 2nd hand 'painted' and immediately sent it to be stripped and painted. All the points mentioned so far are 100% on the money. Paint not reaching the nooks and crannys is one thing, primer not making it will give you a car you wll need to move on quite quickly before the paint falls off or rust takes hold....IMHO

Powder coating it is then. I made a start on the dash tonight and managed to remove most of the parts before I had to give up and come home and find a guide on how to do it. www.miata.net/garage/DashRmv_89_93.pdfthis is very helpful and will make the rest of the job tomorrow a whole lot easier.
