One of my fail points was no heat shield between fuel tank & exhaust. if you use the original mx5 tank it sits directly above the exhaust and needs to be protected-a sheet of alloy did the trick.

Does anyone know for sure whether you are allowed to use rubber fuel pipe for the entire run front to back? I know GBS sell a vinyl kit which has passed IVA many times.

If you are building using a Eunos na, the power to the headlight motors provides a very convenient switched supply for the rear fog light which will fail iVA if it switches on without the headlights.

Few points from my test and tips for the day which I wish I knew before my test.
Don't stress about it. My tester was friendly and also he was being tested by another tester so made it even more done by the book.
It really does take 5 hours
REMOVING PARTS WHEN ASKED You have to remove certain parts when asked, I had to remove a wheel nut so he could check the nuts were suitable for the type of alloy wheel and had the correct angle. Remove several nut caps to inspect bolt ratings. I was asked to remove the rear tank cover however I politely refused.
TIP - When your ready to finally fit your rear cover (which is a pain depending on how your fuel filler setup is) Take detailed photographs and take them with you to the test. When my tester asked me I said it was difficult to remove but showed him my photos to prove: The pipes were not touching, There was a lot of edging trim on all edges of the tank where the pipes ran, The pipes were cover in electrical conduit to help protect them, They were securely mounted, All jubilee clips fitted, Fuel tank vent with one way valve, The pipes were clipped together to prevent chaffing, Receipts for my flexible fuel filler hose to prove it was fuel rated.
My tester was happy with with as I gave a detailed explanation of it which I then backed up with the photos.
SPEEDO Check the accuracy of your speedo, my clocks had Lockwood dials fitted and were not correct. You can under read by what I was told 20% however you CANNOT over read. Check your speedo at increments of 5 MPH starting from 30 - 70MPH.
SIDE REPEATER VISIBILITY A tip I was told by my tester was for measuring the side repeater visibility angle. At the point of where you mount the side repeater, Measure a straight distance outwards of 43cm, Mark on the floor that distance outward, Measure from that point on the floor in a straight line parallel to the car 5m backwards, If the side repeater can be viewed from that point on the floor then it is ok. A nice little test that can be carried out at home and was the method used by the tester to check my side repeater.
SHARP EDGES Fit a front nose cone grill, I left mine off for cooling to intercooler and radiator, and trimmed parts inside the opening. It still failed
People say edging trim everything. This is true but here are some parts I didn't consider. The lower plastic panels, the lower edge of the panel outside needs rounding off to the 2.5mm or edging trim fitting. That same panel needs doing on the top on the inside of the car. The 2 support bars inside the car where the panelling goes also needs edging trim. Headlight brackets, The front strut mount supports (the large flat with the big holes cut in it) need trimming in both sides, The mounting point where the subframe meets the mx5 subframe, Seatbelt top mounting bracket on the roll bar, Brake pipe flexi mounting brackets,
TIP - they said use a tennis ball as a tester, trim anything you can touch with that and you will be fine for the test. Also He said that they are looking for things that a manufacturer would use to overcome sharp edges that are a permanent solution rather than things which can be to to in his words GET ROUND the IVA. As a quick home made radius tool, use an off cut of alloy sheet from the floor panel, drill a 5mm hole in it and cut it in half. Job done.
DOMINATOR HEADLIGHTS If you use these headlights please make sure you take the crappy bulbs supplied with them out and buy QUALITY bulbs, I cannot stress the difference between the bulb patterns of cheap and expensive bulbs. I already checked this so was ok on my test.
BRAKE TEST This was not like a normal test, the vehicle did have a standard test done like at an M.O.T centre but differed slightly, The tester uses a pedal pressure sensor on his foot and take reading at 5 points or pressure on each wheel, This is then I putted into a spreadsheet to calculate braking forces,
TIP - I was told get it tested by an M.O.T centre and drive the car and lock up the brakes, if the front lock they should be ok.
STEERING SELF CENTRING Quick tip as a test they do to check self centring, Drive in a straight line, Turn the wheel slightly, Accelerate, If the wheel centres it's ok, test left and right.
This should be ok as we are using the standard mazda suspension and steering components but can be affected by tyre pressures and steering geometry.
My advice when building the car is set up the steering wheel so it has equal amount of turns lock to lock and get the car laser aligned. This will eliminate any issues as these are old cars and people have a tendency to undo the steering wheel and turn it a spline to try and straighten the wheel instead of getting the alignment done.
TIP - For aligning the wheel correctly
Mark the centre point of the wheel with the wheels straight, Turn the wheel to the left and count the turns, Turn it back to centre, Turn it to the right and count the turns, If they are equal amounts each way your ok. If not undo the centre nut and move the wheel on the splines until you have equal lock. Now get it laser aligned. Make sure they adjust the track rod ends to straighten he steering wheel after alignment is complete instead of moving the wheel as this is easier and they know it can be done on older cars. This all depends on where you get it done tho, try and stay with the car if you can.
FIXING AND BOLTS Self explanatory really, just use either spring washers or nylock nuts on every part of the build. I was asked to prove they type of lock nuts used on my brake pedal bracket as these had a different type of locking device.
NOISE CHECK Mine was done in the middle of the car park so was quiet noisy outside already which I wasn't expecting as I'd tested mine in my quiet garage. Check the distances given in the manual and check it with an iPhone app or the likes, they are surprisingly accurate.
IF IN DOUBT - ASK THEM TO EXPLAIN This was made clear by the older gentleman who was testing the younger tester, I asked lots of questions which he was more than happy go go through, he made the point that they are just there to check the cars are safe and not there to purposely try and fail each car. They like to see that you have taken time to build it and made an effort to try to follow the manual as best as possible and understand its wording is sometimes difficult to interpret. Even once they had explained one of my fail point which even after was explained I asked them to go over it once more so were were both on the same lines.
Well I think that comes most points and I hope it helps others out. If you have any questions regarding my test that I didn't cover just ask.

Hi Folks, I am in the process of getting ready for IVA now and searching for info. I am sure it exists all over place probably, but would be good to get all IVA/ DVLA (registration) related information in one place i.e here. That should be step by step , from getting IVA application form i.e where to find it etc, to DVLA registrations etc. We have enough cars which passed IVA/DVLA to have this comprehensive information in one place. Management can this be arranged please?

Thanks Stuart, that is very helpful and I am sure will help allot of new builders. Just one observation, it looks like the form must have changed since your notes , as it doesn't correspond with the form (IVA 1c) I am completing, unless I am using the wrong form? The one I have goes upto 3c then on to 4a - 4x and on. Also for the pictures, do we have to print the pictures and send with application or take it with on a laptop on the day of the test?

Pictures will need sending with the application, they are to prove you are eligible for the scheme prior to the test being booked.

IVA RULES - REAR FOG LIGHT Oct 7, 2014 at 12:26pm Stuart Mills said: I hope we are all clear on this point now, it will come up again and we do try to keep our cars as easy to build as possible. So just to clarify, rear fog on with dip and main beam and not sides/position, switch that lights up and has a rear fog symbol on it or next to it. Many thanks to everyone for your help and understanding. The wording in the manual could be much better. No buzzer required or special wiring or fancy switch or complex relay. Little advice please I have a ton of receipts and photos etc for my build. How many do they need with the iva application. I assume they want the original V5C for my donor.
Cheers
