So while I am (was) still a long way off from beginning, I decided to shoot off an email to our relevant government department to ask a simple question as I could not find specifics among all the docs I did find.
Fair to say I was disappointed and left a touch flat at the engine rule listed below. No wonder Tom went to New Zealand.
As I live in Tasmania, I have no emissions testing facilities here and it would not be financially feasible to ship the car to a testing station.

I take it you have contacted Terry: www.southam.com.auHe is pretty well versed with local regulations and has invested a lot of money in getting the Rocket in particular on the road in Australia which he has now successfully done. RTR

No I havent contacted Terry.
couple of reasons why. It is the Exocet that I am keen on as I am an Mx5 nut and to put some perspective on the size of Australia, Moscow is closer to London than I am to Terry.
Thats not to say I wont look in that direction in the future, but a 2007 or later donor is asking for some serious cash to be outlayed.
Thanks for the info on his Rocket too. His website shows "nearly done" and last updated in April 2011.

The essence of the Exocet it to breathe life into a tired MX5 and turn it into something much more exciting hence the chassis is designed to accept components from the earlier cars.
I don't think there has as yet been any demand here in the UK for using 2007 onwards MX5's as donors, but in time this could happen. Stuart Mills is the man to ask about this.
I.T. is not Terry's expertise and his site could do with an overhaul that includes images of his finished and road legal cars.
We are shipping to Terry next month so if an early donor Exocet interests you then we could possibly squeeze one into his container.
RTR.

Hey Bauer, while it's not Tassie, we are in the early stages of talking to a Victorian about getting an Exocet into Melbourne. It's definitely do-able. While I highly recommend moving to NZ to anyone that'll listen, I'm sure you won't have to get that drastic! Tom

Hey Tom. Will keep an eye and ear on proceedings in Victoria.
I also popped back in to this thread to thank RTR for the offer of sending one my way but no thanks. Im not ready by a long shot and would happily utilise our NZ distributor when the time comes. I would need to know for sure that I can get the engine passed before dropping a dollar on the project. Im not concerned with the chassis and the need for torsion testing but the engine is a show stopper for me at this point.
As for giving up hope, not yet but my hopes were severely diminished when I read the 2007 ruling. Maybe if one ends up passing emission testing from an authorised facility and the tests are carried out in such a way to pave the way for all builds of the same engine, there may be hope yet.
I know of a supercharged NC MX5 that passed emission testing recently and all cars built the same way can now auto pass without further testing, just proof they were supercharged the same way. This was due to the way they had it tested.

Hi Bauer, i am sure the engine doesn't have to be from a post 2007 car but may have to pass the emissions levels of that year. I am building a Rocket in Sydney, I have heard we have the strictest testing in NSW, with a 2004 focus engine and my engineer says it will be fine in standard tune. You should speak to an approved engineer before making any decisions. Rich.

I agree Rich The engine doesnt have to be a from a post 2007 car - but if it isnt, it must pass the emission test that is current. Whether those emission tests are somewhat equal to a car of 2007, I dont know. But the hard part is that we have no test facility here. Great to see some Aussies come out. Look forward with interest to seeing results of your builds and any Oz quirks that come out of the process. Also agree that I should speak to an engineer. You cant ignore that advice, especially here. Stu

I see that someone has bought the license to manufacture Exocets in Australia. Any news to share on this?
