Hi everyone, just joined the forum having sent in my deposit for a Replicar kit last week. Also picked up an MX5 during the week, '97 1.8L, nice condition overall except for the sills, which are only being held together by paint. Engine running nicely though and was very pleased to find one locally (NI) at a good price. Should be plenty of good stuff to sell off it I'm thinking.
Still can't believe my wife isn't objecting to this project.
Cheers Dave

'Afternoon all, a few questions that I hope someone will be able to help with. After having a good look over my MX5 donor ('97 1.8L) I've discovered a few parts that will need replacement before fitting into a kit: a couple of suspension arms are rusted through, some broken springs, and a few other bits like link bolts that will not survive being unbolted (or even tapped gently with a hammer). Any hints about where to get parts? Wreckers over here (NI) don't seem to have much, despite there being plenty of MX5s on the road. Motor factors also shrug their shoulders when I ask about suspension arms and bushes. Is ebay the best bet? Was also looking at an alternative set of adjustable springs www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-MX-5-MK1-1-6-1-8-90-98-ADJUSTABLE-COILOVER-LOWERING-SUSPENSION-SPRINGS-KIT-/360573876520?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AMX-5&hash=item53f3e0b928, about the same price as getting genuine 2nd hand ones... anyone know if these are likely to be suitable (or junk)? Also wondering about the exhaust setup, in the original DBR1 shots there are side exhausts, so I'm guessing that the MX5 system gets binned... or does it get chopped up and welded into something beautiful? My one makes a throatier rumble than it probably should, the IVA man would frown. If the cat converter gets lost somewhere during the build is that likely to cause frowns as well? Cheers Dave

Not keen on those springs. I tried a set that look similar and they were sent back! The exhaust could be made to route out from the passenger side but I would advise leaving mods that may cause noise or emission problems until a later date. It will need a cat unless you can prove the engine came from a pre July 95. The Replicar looks correct on standard MX5 springs. It not need a low look.

What prompted the return? Perhaps "not keen" is more specific in GB than it is here in the colonies; if so please translate English to English for your fans to the far west.
I don't think they'd be useful for lowering (they say they'll lower the suspension by up to 4", but since they don't change the shock travel any, I'd think that'd just put the suspension 4" closer to the bump stop in jounce) but at first impression, it seems like having adjustable preload would help in suspension tuning.

Would not be appropriate to lower the suspension by 4" without completely ruining the geometry. Even a 30mm drop sees the negative camber increase by around 2 degrees, but you can wind that much back in on the excentric wishbone bolts.
